They always have!!!!!

Those of us of a certain age, will remember when OBree was originally breaking records the UCI changed the rules over lunch so that when Obree arrived his bike had become illegal, He had a n hour to make the modifications

There was also a large portion of his equipment banned. He did not have the budget to have equipment made by a company so used to make his own. These were then deemed "Non commercial" and banned. There is a story where prior to one event he had eight saddles rejected and ended top using a borrowed child's saddle

There were allegations at the time that Obree's advances in position and technology were undermining the rider, so much of the legislation was "anti-Obree" as every innovation he had was promptly banned

Thanks for posting that, really enjoy anything Graeme Obree is involved in. Had the pleasure of hearing him do a Q&A session after a screening of the Battle Mountain film, entertaining, informative and forthright, but didn't seem at all bitter about the poor way he'd been treated in the past.
if anyone hasn't seen Black Mountain,it may be available online and is worth a watch, though some of the filming deserves a big screen.

Edit - I've just re watched this 1994 documentary, a rainy afternoon well spent

Funnily enough the same never applied to Boardman's specially made stuff. One of them the darling of the sport's administrators and the other treated almost as an enemy. A bit like Coe and Ovett in running.

Flying Scotsman - movie made from Obree's biography available on youtube.

Cynic!

The argument was that because the Boardman items were made by a big Company they were therefore saleable and hence "commercially available"

I also remember a Q&A session where a hostile member of the public kept on about things that were simply not OBree's style

Eventually the guy pointed out that O'Bree was not using the proper supplements. OBree then spent ten minutes breaking down the attributes of two thick layers of bread and a filling of jam........ then asked the guy why he would wish to use a tasteless or foul tasting gel at 50 times the price to get the same nutrients............. massive round of applause
