Tragic.

Without spoiling it for anybody intending to watch it on any form of catch-up by revealing the result of the race, it's good to see the best man win.

Saw the crash on FR3's streaming site, and also the raw video of the peloton glancing at Goolaerts flat on his back as they rode past. A bloke was swearing in French but at whom I couldn't say. I hope it wasn't at him.

Wondering now if the crash caused the cardiac arrest or vice versa. There seem to be a lot of such deaths in sport these days.

However it came about, I'm sorry for Goolaerts and for his family - it must be devastating for them.

Paris-Roubaix always was a Roman holiday.

That had occurred to me. Some of the news sites report it as the crash causing it, but if it's the one I saw that I think it is, it didn't seem clear - and in the same posts as they speculate about the crash causing it, the sites relay the request not to speculate

Amen. The only slight comfort may be that hopefully he died doing something he enjoyed.

Apparently it has now been confirmed that he had a cardiac arrest and that's what caused him to crash.

Inquiry opening in Cambrai https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/apr/09/michael-goolaerts-death-paris-roubaix and the autopsy confirmed the crash was caused by heart attack, not the opposite. http://www.velonews.com/2018/04/news/autopsy-confirms-goolaerts-suffered-heart-attack-before-crash_462988

Cardiac arrest will do that.

This is quite interesting, although it does nag you to sign up:

Cardiac hypertrophy a promising candidate.
