I did like reading the classified TT results in Cycling Weakly, the names of the clubs were mysterious and inspiring, like steam locomotive names

An interesting subject for literary study?

Redditch R&PCC
New Tredegar Nomads
San Fairy Ann CC
34 Nomads
Ratae RC
Rennrad Norwich
Godiva CC
A5 Rangers
Hull Thursday

Wobbley Wheelers

Any more?

I thought Wobbly Wheelers were an invention of Johnny Helms.

Tim Hilton, in his excellent book One More Kilometre and We're in The Showers, devotes a small chapter to this subject. In addition to some of those already listed, he mentions The Out-of-Work Wheelers, who arose as a product of Margaret Thatcher's premiership, and also The Scrumpy Wheelers, which sounds like my sort of energy drink.

Met Police Cycling Club
London Dynamo
Colchester Rovers
MAD CC (Maldon and District Cycling Club)
DADs CC (Diss & District Cycling Club)
Vegetarian Cycling & Athletic Club
No. 1 Muslim Ladies Cycling Club
API-Metrow
CC Hackney

Members of the San Fairy Ann CC, are by the way, affectionately known as 'Fairies'. I think that most club cyclists in the east / southeast have heard of them.

Classic Lightweights have a page about clubs & club names... http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/cl ... ences.html

There used to be a Hardly Athletic CC
The very grand sounding Barnstaple Imperial Wheelers who now have embraced the metric system and changed to North Devon Wheelers
Choughs RC (also now no more) named after the national bird of Cornwall.

The cycling club in Horncastle, Lincs is called The Wongers Wheelers.

Apparently named after the local football team whose nickname is The Wongers. The CC kit is even the same as the footie team - red and white stripes.

Ratae Road Club comes from the Roman name for Leicester.

San Fairy Ann is a corruption of a fFrench phrase "Ca Ne Fait Rien"

There is a club near me called OVB - nobody knows what it stands for, it's supposedly old Norse!

There's a club in London called Vicious Velo, named after Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols. My son won their cyclo cross race - on the prize envelope it said "Never mind the [rude word removed], here's the Winner"!

Team Egg or Egg Riders CC.
A few members of one of the CCs I ride with also ride with Team Egg Riders.I think originally they were formed as an off-shoot from an "Exiles" group of another local CC.

A now defunct club that my West Sussex family were members of in 1900 (and possibly before) - The West Tarring Cycling Club.

When most of our club rides starting at the opposite end of our county, a few of us "northerners" used to meet up for a local ride.
We called ourselves the Fishguard And Region Touring Section, abbreviated obviously, but as we were a recently formed breakaway group, we preceded it with the word New.
