SPOTY - Geraint!

Post by foxyrider »

Apparently the so called 'national' sport managed a distant third behind the country's real passion - wheeled sports! Not only that, but the man with the lowest income on the podium was on the top step.

Brilliant result, well done G. :D
Convention? what's that then?

Welsh block vote innit!

Hasn't he been round a few media outlets around the build up to this show? His pr team did well.

Good to see the women coming nowhere again. Fastest female sprinter of the year and a 2 time Olympic or world champion in a seriously dangerous and short career sport.

Footballer losing out in a world Cup year? Now that's funny. It's like Britain's best known Olympic discipline athlete not winning in a summer Olympic year. It should have been a given a footballer won. Goes to show Kane really is a dull guy in front of the camera. Keep it to the pitch.

Lewis Hamilton? Nowhere. Didn't he match the greats of F1 this year? He's won it before I think so perhaps that counted against him.. Maybe next year if he gets another drivers championship under his belt. Perhaps he'll be able to afford a few more sequins on his jacket if that happens.

Seriously regret stopping on the show when flicking through the channels.

Very surprised. Wiggins was the first and had the personality, Froome has done much better but not been taken to heart by the public, Thomas seems a genuinely nice guy but not sure whether winning the tour is better than LH's 5 times or Lizzy Yarnold's achievements. I'd never heard of the sprinter and pleased a footballer didn't win. Interestingly they are not releasing the votes this year.

I only watched the last few minutes of the programme, but if ever anybody wasn't expecting to win it was GT: he seemed flummoxed when he had to make a speech. A worthy winner, IMO.

Also loved the fact that the England Netball Team won two awards.

Football is too tribal, an Arsenal fan would not vote for a Spurs player, now matter how good they were. G is the 4th cyclist to win inn recent years, which shows that bike riders will come together and vote. Froome never won it because he's not really British, being born and brought up in Kenya. I don't think he's ever lived here, even though he's probably the best and most consistent Grand Tour bike rider. Geraint comes across as an ordinary bloke who has had greatness thrust upon him, though he's actually a 10 year overnight success. He's worked hard and deserves what he gets.

Wiggo was the 4th cyclist to win Spoty. Tommy Simpson in 65 followed by Chris Hoy, Mark Cavendish, Bradley Wiggins and now Geraint makes it 5. :D
At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840 :D
