But not the close echelons of large numbers of cyclists in a Peleton, perhaps.

ive had plenty of "full contact" racing in xc races .

Anyway, id have thought a chain ring could do as much damage as a disc rotor, if not more with its teeth, but there has been no call for chain ring guards.

Monster stage today!

Many favourites and team leaders blew big time and G's 30 second loss is quite worrying and is, perhaps, commensurate with the racing he lost after his crash at the Tour de Suisse.

Very strong performance from the Movistar team today, and their showing of no confidence in Quintana.
Impressive 6th stage place for Mikel Landa
Valverde moves up to 9th GC
Movistar take back the 1st Team Award [ they get to wear the yellow number bibs tomorrow! ]

Other than Pinot's win, which was exceptional, the most significant part of today's stage was that Alaphilipe was a close second with NO team support on the Tourmalet!
The lad did it all by himself and could go all the way to Paris in yellow!

While I think it would great for the tour if Ala won should we have any scepticism in our admiration?

He's never finished top 30 in a grand tour and he's been winning events since March. It's an incredible rise in such a short time.

remarkable! The mountains were always set to show any cracks and they did. Not over yet by any means but it does look ominous.

Marc Madiot went pratically berserk as Pinot won the stage! Pinot is up to 6th but is about three minutes off the lead.

Barring miracles it looks like there is no way back on GC for Porte, Mas, Quintana, Adam Yates, Mollema, Aru, Dan Martin.

G reckoned he was feeling weak from the start, so maybe it was just a bad day, but there are lots of mountains left and plenty of chances yet; chances to lose time, win stages, consolidate positions....

cheers

Well, I'm of the view that the tour is a lot cleaner now than it was say 10 + years ago. And I think the data backs this up. That said, we can never be sure.
