How would past champions compete today

Now we have something / quite-a-lot to discuss and celebrate.

Rafle du Vel' d'Hiv'

I hope no modern riders or race organisers would be involved in something like this. Cycling doesn't automatically change people into angels (of the mountains or otherwise)

I don't think any riders or race organisers in the past were involved in it either. The Germans demanded the keys from Jaques Goddet, the TDF organiser, but a failure on his part to give them over would hardly have stopped their entry. His death would only have delayed things briefly.

I'm not going back to look but IIRC the last time this came up on here it was because of renewed allegations of links between this grim event and ASO, current owners of the TdeF and involved with a lot of other big races.

The only link is that Goddet, who handed over the keys, owned L'Equipe which was bought by Amoury(ASO) in the sixties. A tenuous route indeed for claims they were linked to the event.

Back in the day, riders rode everything; there weren't really 'specialists' as there are now. Rider are 'classics', GT, sprinters, etc
Off the top of my head, Valverde, Nibali and Roglic are the only current riders with GT and Monument wins.

While one understands the need for specialisation, I actually like to see riders try other disciplines.

One things for sure, the old riders looked a lot classier and so did their team cars.
