Rather than clutter up this thread any further, viewtopic.php?f=1&t=143811&start=15#p1576746 , relating to 'sit-up-and-
- beg bicycles'; here's a 14 minute video showing a 2017 Sri Lankan 'Standard Bike' race in full flow for anyone who's interest was piqued,
also a link to a different article from the one mentioned in the above thread, explaining what's happening.
There are plenty of modern bike races in the country as well, they seem to have hung on to this type of racing for historic, and perhaps financial reasons, there seem to be riders who do both types, good 'winter training' possibly!

Sri Lankan 'Standard Bike' Race Video
Re: Sri Lankan 'Standard Bike' Race Video
In late December 2006 after enjoying a wonderful lunch of rice and curry in a Nuwara Eliya establishment, central southern Sri Lanka, and then taking a post prandial walk back to where we were staying, we saw 5 or 6 young athletic lads in saggy lycra shorts bent over in as much an aero position as possible belting along on such 'lowly' heavy bicycles, out on a club run/chaingang ride?
They passed too soon to take a photo. That scene will never leave me. It seemed so bizarre.
This topic, although several years later, puts it into some context.
Thanks colin54

That's brilliant. I lived in Sri Lanka for a few years in the early 90s and often saw these races go past. The other impressive thing was long distance runners training on the road (not the pavement) and running without any shoes at a pace that I could only dream of.

Lovely country. A bit like a version of India in which things work properly. (At least if we set aside the civil war; not that India is devoid of that.)
