My misplaced attempt at humour, I fear. I thought that my post was clear that I was having a gentle dig at belated regrets over telly subscriptions.Trouble is, be honest, no-one but Nostradamus could possibly have foreseen how that race would go down!
Re the racing, you are right that nobody could foresee the result, although some might have assumed they could.

Full race here

Mvdp crashes about 9 min in on the race clock, there's a second angle replay shortly after that catches the take off. Or in his case, the lack of take off. His body position does seem to tally with him thinking the ramp was still in place.

I turned it on just in time for the crash but I only just caught it so cannot really say what happened. It looked like a drop off that he just tipped over I think. Not an MTBer so can't really relate to it. The BBC did show longer than the edited clips though. It's often good to check out the red button channels for other sports than the ones BBC think the public want to watch.

Aw right, I get it now, sorry - I didn't connect the two quotes!thirdcrank wrote: ↑27 Jul 2021, 12:53pmMy misplaced attempt at humour, I fear. But yeah, you're right about assumptions. Never assume...
You'll probably know where that's from, thirdcrank. 167 years later and they're still debating whose fault that was."Guns, sir? What guns, sir?"
"There, my Lord, are your guns! There is your enemy!"

This really made me laugh - a droll comment on Reddit r/peloton: "The Dutch are looking forward to 2024 where they will win everything."

Captain Nolan at Balaklava which might illustrate something else: my view that the responsibility for clarity in the message largely falls on the sender. So, less "where did I say that?" and a bit more "what I meant to say was..."

Re: Olympics! (spoilers)
There was a ramp in place for the practice laps allowing people to roll it. They had been told it would be gone for the actual race but for whatever reason he was under the impression that it was still there so didn't bother to lift the front up. If anything it looks like he pumped downwards a bit to keep the wheel on the ramp he thought was there. Or he realised too late and tried to get the wheel up but was already over at that point so same outcome.Tangled Metal wrote: ↑27 Jul 2021, 1:25pm It looked like a drop off that he just tipped over I think. Interestingly the ramp was back in place for the women's race today. For an xc race perhaps that's sensible, the fastest 'line' is still to half manual off and not use the ramp, as the women were generally doing but at the start of the race when everyone's bunched up people might not have the speed to clear the rocks to the nicer landing.

And whilst Ineos marketing will go big guns on how great it is, Ineos management will be wondering why its only once the seasons over (almost) their riders start winning everything so long as its amateur and has no prize money.

Well to be fair, off the top of my head, they have won the Giro D'Italia, Tour of Switzerland, Dauphine and the Tour of Romandie already this year.

Been watching horses dancing. That's got to be a specialist interest sport as it looked pretty dull to me. Couldn't they replace with something more interesting?
Re: Olympics! (spoilers)
I guess that's just two gold helmets they need to buy then?
Serious question: do their wins give them any rights (like the rainbow jerseys) in other races? Could any rider have copied GVA's golden helmet these last 5 years?

Re: Olympics! (spoilers)
I think they only get those rights by custom, so any rider could have copied it, but I suspect they'd get flicked repeatedly by the rest of the peloton until they stopped.
It started before GVA but not long ago. Samuel Sanchez (2008) wore a golden helmet when he was the champion, as I think did Paolo Bettini (2004) when he wasn't also world champion. I don't remember Jan Ullrich (2000) wearing one and can only find pictures of him with celeste helmets in 2003. Vinokourov retired immediately after winning in 2012, which is probably just as well!
