Re: Olympics! (spoilers)
No direct connection with the Olympics but I see that from this year, the international identifier on vehicle reg plates which has been GB will switch to UK. (I used that circumlocution to avoid any pedantry over territories using GB* - I don't know what will happen there.)
Re: Olympics! (spoilers)
Thanks. I hadn't heard that. Any explanation offered?

"Unlike the soon-to-be-invalid GB plates, which were heralded by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps in January, the switch to UK signifiers was not formally announced by the Government. Instead it was spotted as a footnote in UN regulations by the AA, which says it has 50,000 items of stock it will now need to change."

A thoroughly well deserved gold medal for Matt Walls in the men's Omnium earlier today, clearly the class of the field.
Jack Carlin also looked good in the men's sprint competition and takes on Harrie Lavyreyson in the semi finals tomorrow

Re: Olympics! (spoilers)
So I'm correct-ish then.
Team GB is a new term.
Can't remember the BBC calling it that during the last Games in 2016 though. Maybe the Beeb take a while to catch on.
As I said, I pay little on no attention to the Games.
Me, as well as countless other people no doubt, find sport boring.

Am I correct in saying, that "Team GB" is a new expression and this season is the first time the term has been used?
What was the GB Olympic Team called before?
Why a change of name?

It's been used for 22 years. Including the BBC coverage in and since 2000:

I remember being in the office during the last Olympics in Rio. One of my colleagues came in and started talking about Laura Trott winning the omnium, and asked if anyone had seen it? The silence was deafening, and I’m sure a tumbleweed rolled across the floor. This was in an open plan office with 40 people within earshot. I reassured her later that I had seen it and was also mightily impressed. It was then I realised that a lot of the population aren’t in the least bit interested in the Olympics or sport in general.
I’ve been watching the Olympics since 1968, when I was 9, I used to get up early to watch the morning highlights programme before going off to school. This was way before I started cycling. I’m not just interested in cycling either - I’ll watch athletics, swimming, team sports, etc though I’m not that fussed about gymnastics.

Just watched Katie Archibald and Laura Kenny totally dominate the women's Madison, winning 10 of the twelve sprints to take the gold medal. So pleased for Katie Archibald after giving her all in the team pursuit and missing out on a gold medal.
Re: Olympics! (spoilers)
Amazing race, almost so good that it became predictable.

Hi,
A bit like 35/0 in rugby / hockey etc.
Do you think that this is a one horse race when there is not much competition?

I don't see anything strange about the name of the British and Irish Lions. (In contrast to their current tactics... )
But Ireland playing as one team in international Rugby Union is extremely interesting. And a lovely example of something working in practice where it might be expected not to in theory.

Re: Olympics! (spoilers)
Thing is, no-one predicted it before the race!
From what I hear they prepared better tactically than any madison team ever - they weren't simply the two fastest women on the track. Kenny looked pretty despondent about her pure "form" after the TP.
Will try to watch the replay ...
