Edinburgh > London RRA

Now we have something / quite-a-lot to discuss and celebrate.

Edinburgh > London RRA

Post by Paulatic »

Michael Broadwith @24hourmaths is at it again.
Thursday 6am start heading off down the A68.
Forecast is rain sleet and a howling wind hopefully.
Not seen a tracker link yet.

The current record has stood for 32 years, set by Pete Wells in 1989 (17h 48m 4s).

Is there a link to a schedule? The comes much closer to home for me than the End to End

PS - To the extent that you can believe BBC forecasts, that gale should be behind him. Fingers crossed

Thanks for that. Very convenient timing for me as the schedule has him riding to the east of Leeds just after lunch. Unless I cop for any unexpected grandpaternal duties before then, I shall have lunch in a strategically placed pub then offer brief encouragement as he passes. If the forecast gale helps him to be up on the schedule, the encouragement may come first.

All being well, I plan to be somewhere near 201 miles on the schedule, jumping up and down and cheering.

At one time or another, mainly in my youth, I've been familiar with most of the route. As a teenager I rode the A68 from Northumberland to Edinburgh + reverse a few times and I remember once having a nightmare dreaming about the Soutra climb. Nowadays, the bit in North Yorkshire is transformed in that the old A1 (not the original A1 ) dual carriageway is now reduced to a decent single carriageway running mainly alongside the A1(M) I've never been a time trial rider but that stretch of the A1 used to have several well-used courses. Traffic is generally light, and the helpers in an event like this should be able to use the A1(M) to leapfrog quickly without any risk of compromising the integrity of the attempt. Beyond Darrington, the A1 has largely remained undeveloped since it was dualled in the 1960s. None but the brave. Further south I believe much of the route is more like the bit in North Yorkshire.

Technical numptie speaking.

I presume that when the attempt begins, we will be able to follow progress via that link.

I see that I can send that to a device including an iphone. Does that mean I would be able to follow progress on my phone when at the roadside waiting to jump up and down and shout?

That is the link given so far described as route and tracker. I wonder if that little timer box will strike up on the off and position on route shown. If any other links appear I will post.
I think send to device will just send the route. I imagine you will need to open that link in your phone browser.

Other info
IMPORTANT – please remember it’s roadside support only. You can’t ride alongside / in front or offer support from a moving vehicle (not even blowing a horn or shouting through the window) - that would breach
@RRA_GB
rules and potentially invalidate the attempt

3 Are you on or close to the attempt route? If you’re able to come out to support, a huge thank you. Cheering, music, drum banging, bell ringing, fancy dress and guitar playing made a massive difference on the End to End!

Thanks for that. I'll try to improve my IT skills with my phone.

Re the other stuff I know the RRA rules and I know the value of a bit of moral support. I'm undecided over clapping as against taking a picture of what for me would be a once-in-a-lifetime witnessing a ride like this.

No activity on that this morning. Does anybody know if that means the attempt is not going ahead or if it just reminds me I need my granddaughter to turn the telly on?

Thanks and double thanks for that. The forecast strong northerly wind must have come early because I felt it's force last night when my grandsons were at soccer training. The wind here - W Yorks - has dropped a bit and turned westerly. Bright sunshine, but the temperature has plummeted from 20+ degs a couple of days ago to just above freezing now.

Fingers crossed for 24hrsmaths.

And thanks again for plugging this gap in my IT skills

Thanks to the help from paulatic I was in position to witness this ride at 201 miles here.

South on Great N Road, through Micklefield, becoming A63 to RAB nr Ledsham

At that pont I think he was some 10 minutes down on schedule, but looked to be riding strongly.

I was split between taking pictures and applauding so I fear I made a poor attempt at both.

On the way home on the A1(M) the matrix was warning of traffic queues beyond the M62 and I worried that might cause problems, especially for the timekeepers' vehicle but it looks as though he's now passed that bit of the A1.

Checking from the comfort of my armchair and following the tracker on a bigger screen than my phone it looks as though he's back more or less on schedule. 1620 ish

Pleased TC got to cheer MB on.
Has been behind schedule as I think getting through Newcastle took longer than planned.
They report standing traffic at Bawtry but I think it had gone when they got there.

Thanks to TC and his like it looks unofficially we have a new record.
We’d wondered if E2L wouldn’t get much interest compared to the E2E but the support out there today was incredible. There were stretches of road where every single lay-by and bridge had supporters.
