-oh yes... tsk tsk obviously not trying... :wink: -that explains all the missing paint on the chainstay I expect....

More Fausto Coppi photos here;

http://www.bikeraceinfo.com/photo-galleries/rider-gallery/coppi-fausto.html

plus lots of other rider galleries.

There is a picture of Coppi riding Paris Roubaix in 1950 in the link above. It appears to be the same season that the previously discussed picture was taken. Maybe even the same race. It seems the 1950 version of the P-R gear was the 'one lever' version. I'd seen the 'two lever' version before, (which allows you the 'luxury' of pedalling forwards whilst you shift). The 'one lever' version forces you to backpedal whilst shifting gear.... :shock: .

BTW there is a nice write-up on the Paris-Roubaix gear here;

cheers

Is it because drugs were legal in Coppi's day?

Nice pictures though.

The drugs they used in coppi's day probably handicapped you more than helped. Amphetamines dehydrated them, alcohol and opiates sedated them, and the medical knowledge was more like witchcraft than science!
