Cycling uk measure of success

Post by Philip Benstead »

Cycling UK
How do you measure sucess or failure
How do you measure it success or failure compare to the ctc
How do you compare with others in the sector

Surely you need to know what the goals are to be able to measure whether they have been successfully met (over time)?

Are the goals of Cycling UK the same as the CTC?

In a firm success would mean the bottom line, are we making money. In the cui case it must mean 1 increase UN membership 2 increase in influence 3 increase in cycle safety 4 do we have enough money to run cuk

Cycling UK is a trading name of the Cyclists' Touring Club. The brand is simply a tool that the Trustees have chosen to use in promoting the objects of the Club.

The Charitable objects of the Cyclists' Touring Club are:-
1.7 The objects for which the Club is established (the Objects) are to:
........ 1.7.1 promote community participation in healthy recreation by promoting the amateur sport of cycling, cycle touring and associated amateur sports;
........ 1.7.2 preserve and protect the health and safety of the public by encouraging and facilitating cycling and the safety of cyclists;
........ 1.7.3 advance education by whatever means the trustees think fit, including the provision of cycling, training and educational activities related to cycling;
........ 1.7.4 promote the conservation and protection of the environment.

Cycling UK cannot have different goals to the Cyclists' Touring Club, but I'm sure weareCyclingUK already knew that :wink: .

Cycling UK is a trading name, not a legal entity. You can only seek to measure the performance of the Cyclists' Touring Club.

You may try to compare the past performance of the CTC trading name with the future performance of the Cycling UK trading name but it would not be a simple task.

I'm sure that in promoting the charitable objects Cycling UK's aims include increasing membership, influence and cycle safety whilst having sufficient funding. However there are many factors beside the trading name that may influence their success and whilst these may be among the measures they seem unlikely to be the only ones.

A trading name operation can have different objectives from the registered entity. It's one reason why trading names are used - to differentiate it from the legal entity to allow it to pursue different objectives (e.g. develop a different market sector).

I have to disagree. Cyclists' Touring Club is the legal entity responsible for all actions undertaken under the trading name of Cycling UK, a trading name cannot be used to do anything outside of the Club's objects.

It would be possible to have multiple trading names, each being used for particular purposes but none of those purposes could be outside of the Club's objects.

The legal entity of the Cyclists' Touring Club has wholly owned subsidiary companies, which are separate legal entities. These can and do have their own objectives.
