Thanks for all the replies. Reading them, I think that 400km would probably be a lifetime best for me, and even that may not be achievable. But, it's something to aim at.

I'd have to be a lot quicker, but I think I can speed up somewhat.

Thinking of my recent ride, I could have carried less heavy stuff. It would help if I was used to riding in the drops, for better aerodynamics. A better sadde would have helped.

I was thinking of going straight for 300km next. But, thinking about it, I should probably build up more slowly.

Most I've done was 435, but a chum managed 500. Young feller, though; I was 60 at the time.

Sorry, kms. Haven't thought in miles since 1975 or thereabouts.

Er... would that be English, Irish or Scots miles?

Wiki gives the Scots mile as 320 falls. I do hope not.

Welsh miles, they are the longest, something to do with trigonometry and ironing.

I did 200 miles this year for the first time, and did about 8 by the end of the summer. I was well on my way to a 250 mile day with loads of time in hand, but got bored and decided to go home and put the kids to bed. I think 300 miles in one day is achievable for me on the right course with good weather. I might try it next summer. In fact I seem to be talking myself into it as I type, so I'm going to stop now before I commit!!

In which case it should start now!

Keeping going through the winter makes it easy in the spring. On the year that I committed to doing a "Ride Around The Year" (200k ride every month) when May arrived the 300k wasnt a shock at all.
Audax traditionally runs it 300ks early in the year as preparation for the longer rides later on.

I'm currently in Japan cycling unsupported across the Japanese Alps, so that's 12 days of back to back riding....I'll probably give myself a couple of days off when I get back before I start training for next year...;-)

If I wanted a 400km route, then I could ride from Folkestone to Leicester. The earliest I can get to Folkestone if I'm going to do that as a day trip is 7:30am, which means catching the 4:37am train from Leicester. Or, if I wanted to start earlier, that would require an overnight stay.

That gets close to 400km (385km at present, but it still has major towns and A roads to be removed).

I guess it's 500k now then. I've already roped someone into doing it with me
