Acid Reflux

Post by Dorset_Steve »

Morning,

I used to get acid reflux quite regularly. Anyhow, i completely changed my diet and now rarely get a bout of it. At the time i took Omeprazol in order to combat it, which it did.

So i've tried to take up cycling, more notably triathlons a little more seriously yet i dont think i'm currently fulfilling my potential because any extended periods of hard pushing results in a pain in my stomach coupled with nausea causing me to yield and sit up. Something i'm definitely relating back to my acid reflux.

Would anyone who suffers from this go back to the Omeprazol every time you anticipate a hard session? It seems like the obvious solution but i didnt want to rule out any non-drug related remedies.

Thanks in advance.

Did you ever find out the root cause of your acid reflux? Or just treat symptoms?

Do you use energy drinks, supplements, energy bars, or anything like that? They are notorious for causing indigestion. I'd recommend cutting those out first.

If you aren't using any energy drinks, supplements, etc., the cause could be related to your reflux, though I don't think acid reflux would cause this without other symptoms.

Have you asked your GP?

I don't use a lot. When i'm racing, perhaps one gel every 40 minutes. An electrolyte drink, but again nothing that would impact it too much.

I also get it when i've not taken them.

Not consulted GP in recent times, no.

Thanks

My neighbour suffered from bad reflux, but after some consultations with an alternative dietician it has completely gone.

Could get more info if you want.

I've recently been diagnosed with this and put on Omeprazol. It came as a surprise as I thought I had a persistent throat infection. I was getting Indegestion but never thought it was related. The doc has now cut my dose by half but it has not cured it completely. Checking online my diet appears ok and raising my chest and head on extra pillows helps. I suspect my diet may need changing so I am also open to any advice or ideas.

Cheers

Hi,
GP will rule out obvious things like gall stones?
My partner was violently sick with no warning (rush to toilet to throw up) up to that never ben sick in her life, most of us men probably have through drink :)
I had my gall bladder removed because I had stones but did not feel pain or jaundiced, same with my partner, food stuffs were mentioned but no pattern at all.
I was suffering other gut problems like hiatus hernia - twisted bowl through adhesions of the gut so was done all at once.

It would be the hiatus hernia repair that solved the reflux.

It's important to find out why you are suffering from reflux. There are all sorts of possible underlying causes. Some of them are not really obvious. It may require a specialist to sort it out.

Causes of reflux vary from dietary sensitivities to infections to mastocytosis.

Long term, reflux can cause issues with the esophagus. Damage from stomach acid can cause changes in the tissue lining the lower esophagus. These changes are associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer.

Cause of mine was/is a "sliding hiatus hernia" (as best I recall the diagnosis - many years ago). I've just stuck with the Lansaprazol, dosage halved some years ago with no effect either way. Now very rare for even a touch of indigestion, although I do avoid e.g. fry ups! No idea of the relative impact but I do usually keep to what I think of as "easily digestible" foods. Nil alcohol (I'm a non-drinking alcoholic these past 14 years and 6 months) probably helps. Lifting at a stretch used to be a real trigger, so maybe a position on a bike could contribute?

Same here and and I am trying to lose some weight as the doctor told me that you can exercise all you like its only by cutting down on your food intake you will lose weight. As I have just read on another thread if only losing weight was as simple as taking a coat off.
