oats: a grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people.

It was mentioned on a previous porridge thread viewtopic.php?f=16&t=102127&hilit=scotland+horses&start=60#p1189361

I heard about a Scot who replied to an English comment about oats in Scotland being like wheat in England with "Aye - better men, better food."

I don't recall it being specified which was better.

The Romans ate porridge I wonder if the Blue men in dresses nicked the recipe.

I remember reading hornblower as a kid and wondering what burgoo was.

porridge made with salt pork meat and fat chopped into it. apparently now its a posh stew.

I've been a bit slow to see this as a rebuke.

There's hegemony surrounding porridge which elevates an oatmeal mush into something more than a foodstuff. I feel no guilt in debunking it. Ditto, the batter pudding associated with flat caps and the second person singular.

I didn't mean it as a rebuke. Just information. I actually thought it had been discussed on this thread and looked back for it, and got all the way to the beginning before I realised it must be the other porridge thread.

Porridge is especially good in summer, it goes down so easily
I make it fresh mind, best not to leave it standing overnight in hot weather, might go mouldy

Mind, porridge is great in winter too

Ahem Paulatic. Yes Scotch is the drink but in the past and probably at the time of the quote Scotch was often used to describe the people so not necessarily incorrect.

I thought you made it fresh for brekky then let it set for a lunch dumpling or deep fry it in batter for your tea

I do have it for supper occasionally, reminds me of a story, the river by Llareggub was so full of salmon, the lads working at the mill got sick of eating it every day
They forced the miller to feed them something else on alternate days
Porridge no doubt

do you have it on toast for supper then?

I feel sorry for the welsh mill workers mind. must have been like working in a chip shop before they started adding sausages pies and pizzas.

I make mine in the early evening, in the microwave then leave it to soften up ready for reheating for breakfast. No evidence of mould on mine.

Can I just say that you should correct the statement a bit?

You find - and other people do too - find it is especially good in summer, as you and other people find that it goes down easily.
You make it fresh mind, and you find it's best not to leave it standing overnight in hot weather as it might go mouldy.
You and other people find it great in winter too.

I find it horrible - always.
So it's not good in summer, winter, or left standing overnight. You do, but not me.
