Over 55, are you fit?

Post by al_yrpal »

Watch this.?.. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05w69pq

Should be a no brainer for us older cyclists. If you are younger than 55 please do your own poll for your age group.

I heard that being a cyclist makes you 10 years younger than you actually are!

Watch this clip and tick your time for 10 stand ups/sit downs from a hard chair.

If you are faster than 10 seconds have a cigar! Slower than 18, out on that bike, now!

Al (15 seconds @ age 75)

Not sure about that one. I would have thought that the heavier you are, not fatter, heavier. It would take you longer. Much like riding a bike up a hill. I'm big and heavy so suffer like that. I'm 69 and took 11 secs by the way. I notice some of those younger ones were going that fast they were barely touching the seat .

Female, 10 secs @ 67. I'm slim which probably helps, and all my cycling inevitably includes hills.

TBH I was a little disappointed with my 15 second result aged 65. I thought I’d be faster.
Then I did the 3 minute step exercise.....made my day HR was 81 and returned to 59 in a couple of minutes. That’s Cycling for you :D :D :D

That test isn't a measure of fitness.
I'm 65 , weigh 17 stone, have atrial fibrillation and heart failure yet managed 10 in 10 seconds. It measures strength or rather power to weight ratio not fitness - they are not the same thing.

This might be a bit better test of fitness - at least it lasts longer so is more stamina sapping http://www.topendsports.com/testing/tes ... -stand.htm

Hi,
Your knees need to be touching front edge of chair.
Seat height should give thighs parallel to ground.
Bum full on chair with straight back?
Legs straight locking out.
To be accurate ideally some one would check you are a good style and time you.
I did 10 seconds second time, I am limping still when I walk and back is sensitive from yesterdays cycle.
Confident that I could do less in time I am 59 & one stone over weight, But we are cyclist and this would be best group.
Not sure everyone in vid was doing it right, including 8 secs had bum full seated, he looked youngish and marine wanabee type :)

Power to weight is the exercise, some of the others here are very good results.
Old slim females would win hands down I reckon.

Slow for me: 19 sec at age 71, one heart attack & 3 stents. OTOH the chair seat slopes back and I'm still recovering from a too-hefty ride on Tuesday and a stiff walk this morning.

ETA: after trying 3 or 4 times in a row I got it down to 17 sec. Reckon that means anything?
Have we got time for another cuppa?

This test was just suggested as a very rough and ready way of measuring fitness. 17 seconds for someone of 71 is pretty good. I only did it once, I was slightly knackered afterwards

Must depend on chair height and leg length also.

I used a dining chair in the kitchen and did it steadily and managed 16seconds. I didn't rush, but I suppose I could have done it in half the time though it wouldn't have been proper sitting and proper standing. That clip didn't show people sitting and standing, all they were doing was going up and down.

Oh yes, I'm 65.

Hi,
Just done 30 in 34 seconds  , but would advise anyone with a bad back, heart condition, hernia etc not to try the test :)
If you were not a suffer before you might be after

Mick F sounds rough get to the docs soon.

I am not 55 (still 10 to go !!) but actually I was pretty impressed by the programme as I expected to hate because of possible BS. Most on here would easily pass the two simple tests they set but for non exercise people I think they showed what is possible with little money and some determination.

One of the younger guys wasn't doing them properly. His backside wasn't touching the seat. Cheat!
