What insoles to buy for plantar fasciitis?

Help guys. I have been having real trouble with my feet for the last couple of weeks. They feel as thought are on fire all the time and I haven't been able to cycle for ages. I suspect that I have plantar fasciitis and after a little bit of research found out I need better support in my shoes. Does anyone have any good suggestions for what insoles to buy or what to look out for. I don't have a big budget which means custom insoles are out the question for me...although some sites that I have read tell em that they are more placebos than anything else anyway. Had something similar a round 6 weeks ago. I’d heard of hot foot but had never suffered from it before.
I put it down to recently changing from worn out ATAC pedals to Shimano. Spd touring pedals, winter socks, and misplaced cleat. I moved cleats and put old credit cards under the insole at point of contact. Helped a bit but still niggled .
My solution: I’ve put flat, V8, pedals on all bikes and wearing comfy walking shoes. Also got my best ever time on a regular 25 ml route the other day so I can’t say flats are holding me back.

It might be an idea to get your GP to confirm that you really do have PF before going to any expense. Apart from anything else the NHS might fund your inserts.

I believe I may have this as well. I've had a few flare ups the last being on holiday a few weeks ago. I usually get it on holiday and am linking it to wearing sandals / flip flops which have less support than my usual footwear. I'm unable to walk or cycle for a few days. I usually over compensate and my ankle suffers for weeks afterwards.

I thought it may be gout but it affects the arch of my foot which swells and goes red.

The only thing that cures it is Naproxen or Diclofenac (my usual back medication )

The advice about seeing your GP is sound advice and a reminder for me to do exactly that this week

I wear custom made insoles for collapsed arches. A couple of years ago I also suffered with plantar fasciitis in both feet. So my experience is that using insoles and curing PF are not necessarily linked. To cure PF I stopped wearing backless shoes (apparently keeping backless shoes means you curl your toes causing PF) and started keeping a golf ball under my desk to roll under my arches, stretching the ligament. It worked for me.

T'other half suffers with PF. She was referred to local hospital by our GP. They custom made insoles for her which she uses all the time.

When I had PF it lasted for months and only cleared up when I was put on a high dose of ibuprofen to deal with a badly sprained wrist.

When I say high I think I had tried taking the suggested on the packet 400mg dose a couple of times a day for a few days with no long term affect on the PF.

Bearing in mind my 16 stone weight the nurse at the minor injury clinic I went to for a wrist X-ray suggest a 600mg dose 3 times a day for a week for my wrist. This both helped my sprained wrist and cleared up my PF.

While I'm not suggesting anyone takes higher than recommended doses of anything it may be the case the anti-inflammatory drugs of some kind might help.

Thanks for your replies guys really a big help. woke up this morning and the pain in my arches really stung. I got an appointment with the doc in 3 weeks to look at my feet... probably will then be referred to a foot specialist which will take even longer too get things sorted.

Going to try that gold ball trick thanks! and been looking at different shoes that I can wear but looks as though style goes out the window when it comes to orthopedic shoes :/

Are you using cycling shoes with rigid soles?

FWIW I got PF when I first started doing longer distances on road but cured it simply by buying and wearing proper cycling shoes with rigid soles instead of the soft soled training shoes that I used to use.

when I had similar issues three or four years back I tried gel insoles, got measured by scholls shop etc, better but not great, went to GP, got referred to podiatry at local hospital who then referred me to orthotics dept where i had some insoles made which were great (and free!) Took a few weeks to get sorted but that would be my advice to you

Achilles tendinitis can take several weeks to heal. It’s vital that inthe first week or so that you try to keep weight off your feet. So as a little walking as possible. Thereafter increase walking gradually. Do not do stretching exercises until the tendon has recovered and you no longer feel any pain. In the first instance, rather than buying expensive insoles you could try heel pads. These raise the height of the heel a few millimetres to reduce tension on the tendon. If that doesn’t work and you want insoles go and see a professional. You could try getting a referral from your GP to NHS podiatrist but expect a long what even if you achieve that. If your tendon does recover try stretching and strengthening exercises for tendon and calf.

I self-diagnosed pf and also have low arches. I tried different orthotics from podiatrists but they usually made things worse and sometimes very painful.

I decided that bare feet is more natural than wearing arched shoes so have worn barefoot shoes for the last few years.

It took a few weeks to adjust to them but have worn nothing since for the last few years. Styles are limited and they are expensive but the pf has stopped.

I also faced this debate last year. I decided rather than shell out the $$$ for custom orthodics right away, I'd see how the affordable options worked out and if custom was going to be worth the expense. Turns out the store bought inserts (the ones you heat up in the oven to mold to your foot better), worked like a charm.

It should also be noted that I was wearing Kayanos, and had been for a few years, when I developed PF. Turns out the latest pair I had bought (January '09) was the first model they had made a bunch of changes to.
