Osteoarthritis
Re: Osteoarthritis
I don't know why anyone uses osteoarthrosis rather than osteoarthritis.
(From the derivation the first is "presence or condition of... " and the second is "inflammation of... ".)

Re: Osteoarthritis
Quick update:-
Had a telephone appointment with my GP today regarding my X-ray results.
Osteoarthritis confirmed. Also a swelling around my joint.
Left knee is worse than right. They've now referred me to a specialist to asses the severity and decide on what's the best course of action.
So for now it's carry on with the Ibuprofen Gel/Supplements until I'm assessed.
At least I now know exactly what it is and not something more sinister.

Had a telephone appointment with my GP yesterday regarding my knees Osteoarthritis
Right knee extremely painful when walking up or down stairs. When sitting down/standing up. Generally normal walking is alright. To consider the severity and decide on what's the best course of action was my Doctor has now told me the following. This I have embarked upon starting today..
So for now it's carry on with the Max strength Ibuprofen Gel and purchase (arriving today from Amazon) a knee strap/brace which has moving 'hinges' each side. These apparently help lift the upper knee joint away from the lower part, thereby reducing weight on the bone/nerve.
I certainly hope this brace works!
She also (Doctor) said to take four times per day Paracetamol and reduce gradually the Ibuprofen gel/cream. I am not able to take Codeine because I am allergic and I am unable to take Ibuprofen pills due to heart condition (not coronary but valve damage following Pulmonary embolism)
I am a walking nightmare but carry on doing the best and what I can. No other way is there?
I take multiple pills per day (21) for heart and other ailments including back pain stenosis (Gabapentin) and Prostate (Tamsulosin) other Losarton-I will leave it for now because there's more!
Regards to all fellow sufferers.

Re: Osteoarthritis
I have chronic osteoarthritis in both feet, right knee, both hands ...... and neck.
Use Tramadol with Paracetamol to help with pain relief.
As has already been said, regular exercise is important and despite it being painful is actually good.
I've started cycling on my Dr's advice because its less painful than walking ...... its only been a few weeks but so far so good

Re: Osteoarthritis
Personally I've never found Ibuprofen helps me (no noticeable effect, neither pills nor gels). Asked my physiotherapist about this and she said it is more effective for some people than others.
So I gave-up using the Ibuprofen gels but have found Voltarol helps (subject to where it's used). I understand its active ingredient is diclofenac rather than Ibuprofen and diclofenac can have side effects e.g. cardiovascular risks (so check with whoever should be checked with on using such medication).

Re: Osteoarthritis
A friend posted a photo on Facebook a few days ago of a 'bite' on her leg and the subsequent rash that has grown over a few days. Her GP is treating it with anti-biotics whilst awaiting blood results for suspected Lyme disease.Although it's not the 'bulls-eye' rash associated with Lyme not everyone gets this.
About 18 months ago I had a very similar 'bite' which resulted in an almost identical rash.My GP also treated it with anti-biotics but ruled out Lyme disease due to the rash not being a 'bulls-eye'.
I might be doing 2+2=5 here but it was not long after that I first noticed the dull ache in my left knee.I though nothing of it at the time as back then I thought I'd just twisted my knee.
I'm in half a mind to talk to my GP and request blood tests. Can't hurt I suppose? The X-Rays showed definite Osteoarthritis so I'm wondering if it could be due to Lyme disease?

Chronic problems that might be related to Lyme disease can be very complex. And laboratory investigations might not give simple answers.
As always, if you're concerned talk to your GP.
NHS advice:

NICE guideline, including a recommended pathway for the use of laboratory investigations:

PS: Laboratory investigations can cause hurt. Apart from cost and invasiveness this is particularly common when there isn't a plan of what to do when the reports are available.

Re: Osteoarthritis
I am also a member of the "club". I buggered my knees with too much running when I was in my 20s/30s and was advised to take up cycling. Since then I have osteoarthritis and rheumatism in most of my joints and back (nice knobbly knuckles and other freakish looking effects). I just ignore the limitations and pain and walk and cycle as much as I can. The following is my mantra
One finger, one thumb, one hand, one arm, one leg, one nod of head, stand up sit down keep moving
One finger, one thumb, one hand, one arm, one leg, one nod of head, stand up sit down keep moving
One finger, one thumb, one hand, one arm, one leg, one nod of head, stand up gsit down keep moving
And we'll all be happy and pride.
(Never knew the last word was "Pride"?)

Re: Osteoarthritis
How can that be Pride? I've heard merry and bright and happy and bright.
Excellent principle.

Re: Osteoarthritis
I'm equally buggered. Too much running with big rucksacks in my teens and twenties and not learning that I can't run off the hills in my 40's. In my 50's and my knuckles are stiff, my elbows are currently killing, too much fire wood splitting today. Cycling almost daily helps the knees a bit but a 30 minute walk along the sloping beach yesterday turned me into a hobbling old man.
I am told that stopping red meat might work but that's my dietry delight so stuff that.

Re: Osteoarthritis
I don't eat red meat but the rate my arthritis is spreading I might as well start eating it.
A bike does more miles to the banana than a Porsche.
Re: Osteoarthritis
That's an unusual combination. I'd recommend trying to sort out what's causing the thigh pain: it might not be arthritis.bigjim wrote: ↑16 Jan 2021, 3:08pm I've got it in the hips and knees. Consultant says it's moderate and the joints are good. However I've been off the bike for 2 months because of pain in my left thigh when I ride. I don't know if the arthritis is causing this. I'm running 3 miles every day as I have no pain when I run and it seems to help. My consultant has said in the past that he had no problem with my running as long as I was comfortable with it. I woke up with a lot of pain in my thigh this morning. Been for my run and pain has gone. will be back tonight I presume. Arthritis likes us sitting around.

Re: Osteoarthritis
I've just had the results of my routine(annual) Blood tests and there was nothing out of the ordinary so I was over-thinking regarding the bite.Something else ruled out so it is just Osteoarthritis.Still waiting to see a Consultant but I suspect it will be a good while yet.
I've also started back at the gym.Steady running on the Treadmill feels more comfortable than on Tarmac so I'm just going to plod on until told otherwise.
I've taken to wearing compression knee straps when exercising or riding and this also seems to help.
