Stomer belt

Post by Tom »

Dear Editor, I am 4 monthes into having a major operation to remove my bladder and prostate plus a kidney due to cancer,
Question one the surgery was key hole and robotic ,how long would it be safe to start riding a cycle again,
Does any body know of a stomer belt that would suit me for cycling that protects against hernia problems etc.

Thank you

It would be worthwhile checking with your surgeon, if you have the opportunity to have a follow-up appointment with them. If you outline what your goals are, they'll give you a conservative time-frame before people typically reach those goals.
Your GP may be able to assist but they may just pass you on to a specialist regarding this.
I hope the operation was successful and you make a speedy recovery.

I wouldn't wait for an appointment. Email the department and get in touch with the stoma therapist now.

Then I'd ask about the available devices and about the relevant patient and self-help groups.

When you do have an appointment it's a good idea to have your questions written down in advance so that you don't forget any.

Hope you're back on the bike as soon as possible.

Best wishes with this. I've no experience of stomas but a fair bit related to medical consultations. In addition to the excellent advice about writing down all your questions, I'd recommend getting somebody to go with you. That needs to be somebody in whom you have confidence but who is not so close that they may be even more worried than you are. ie You need somebody who will be calm enough to listen and remember, but also who is prepared to press for more information if there's any lack of clarity.
