1 X 11 speed

Hi everyone,

I've just been to pick my bike up from my LBS after repair, unfortunately they were unable to fix the initial problem which was the front derailleur mount had come away from the carbon fame (there was just not enough material to re drill and rivet back on) after talking to there frame man for a while he suggested to go to a single ring and a wide range cassette on the back.im thinking it is a good idea, probably my only choice but need to decide on ratios etc..
I know everyone is different regarding ratios but was wanting to know if anyone else runs on a single ring and how they find it?

As a lad most all bikes had a single chainring and maybe a 3 speed Sturmey on the back.
Just a case of picking the right ratio to suit the terrain.

As an option, can you not fit a "band on" FD?

Can't do the band option as the tubes tapered and would be too much pressure and crush it.

With more than 1 front ring you'll get range and close jumps between gears - with only 1 ring you can't achieve both (if that's important to you)

I'm not too bothered about the bigger jumps to be honest, it's looking like a good option. Might just go for it and see how it goes once I decide on a ratio that suits me

there are many different front mechs, including those which can use a flexible band of simple design. With a little effort such a mech could be fitted to almost any seat tube. Friction holds the mech in place; with a rubber packing piece between the flexible band and the seat tube, there can be plenty of friction without there being a large crushing force.

Alternatively you could perhaps use an 'E-fit' front mech, e.g. like this;



Another option is to talk to a carbon frame repair specialist; I would say that a competent repairer would be able to reinforce the damaged area in the frame and add bonded-in fittings that will accept a front mech mount of some kind (some makes use them screwed in place rather than riveted).

You would need to consider the frame geometry, the gear system and the shifters before choosing a new front mech. Do you have a photo of the damage?

I didn't want 1x11 when I was buying a new MTB but got such a good deal on the higher spec bike that I was willing to put up with it.
On the MTB I love it, friend has basically the same bike with 2x10 and having ridden both would not go back. My friend however is now looking to upgrade to 1x11.
Ratio wise decide if you need the same spread, wider spaced cassette or if your willing to loose a bit of range from the top or bottom of the range for a closer cassette.

What is your existing set up?
Conventional compact double, 34/50 tooth?
Whats on the back, 11/30?
Just taking that as an example, if 34/11 is high enough for you, you could just use a 34 front, 11/30 back and keep your existing bottom gear.
If you don't need a gear as low as your existing bottom gear, you could use bigger than 34 front.
However, its most likely that you want higher than 34/11 top gear, and 34/30 is also useful.....
..........then you have to consider wide range cassettes (11 up to 46 here..https://www.rosebikes.com/article/shimano-xt-cs-m8000-11-speed-cassette/aid:812474....and a gear mech. that will handle such a range.
With 11 sprockets, the range 11 to 46 teeth has fairly small jumps!

I don't have a front derailleur on my (old steel) commuter. 13-26 with a 38 ring is fine for that ride, but then on the commuter I'm never trying to ride particularly fast, climbing slow and freewheeling downhill

One thing to be aware of is that the chain may occasionally come off the ring when the chain is running at much of an angle. You can get chainrings that prevent this, like this 9/10 speed one http://www.wiggle.co.uk/hope-single-chainring/

although the BB mounted Front Mech may be the answer too

I was thinking about a 38 on the front with a wide range 11-36 on the back????

I expect there is a large weight penalty if going the single chainring and large sprocket route, 'cos those large sprockets must weigh some!

Not sure about the weight myself! But what I've read they either are the same or less depending on what you get?

My Surly Pacer is a 9 speed 38 front and 12-36 rear. I find it good for up to low 20s mph and low enough to get me up just about anything unloaded. I think the extra range on a 11-36 would make if fine for most situations.

I'm a spinner though so some people might want a slightly bigger chainring.

Just doing some arithmetic, and I'd need a 48t single ring and 11-50 cassette to get the ratio spread I have with my triple 10sp.
53/42/28 and 12-30

Can you buy 11-50 cassettes?
