Just come back from a quick test-ride.
Not utterly silent, but tons better than it used to be.
Just taken the rear wheel out and done a bounce test listening very closely, and yes, you can just hear it.
I doubt I can do anything more now. I think it's as good as it gets.
.................. unless someone has a good idea what else I can do.

Started rattling again.
Maybe the plastic is wearing away?
I'll strip it down in the next few days, and see what's going on in there.

Re: Noisy Sturmey Archer 3sp
ICBA to read the whole thread, but is it an SRF3? The thin pressed steel shroud around the extra driver pawls is a source of rattles, once the lubricant has dissipated, and early failure. Spares are available, although personally I'd replace it with a pre-NIG AW.
Re: Noisy Sturmey Archer 3sp
It's a CS-RF3
https://www.sturmey-archer.com/en/produ ... rf3-silver
Takes my Shimano 10sp cassettes ok. Ultegra 12-30 at the moment, but have used Tiagra 11-28 and 105 11-28.
Yes, it's a long thread!
Basically, the bits inside knock against the inside of the shell, plus the bits inside move against each other side-to-side.
By using a plastic sleeve to stop the internals making such a racket on the shell, and by fitting a plastic shim to stop it moving sideways ........... and using Landrover hub grease ................ things have been sweet.
............. but it's started to rattle again, not as bad as when I originally sorted it, but rattle it does.
1st gear is ok-ish, as is 3rd gear, but second when freewheeling is the main issue.

Re: Noisy Sturmey Archer 3sp
Put more SA gunge into it?
Re: Noisy Sturmey Archer 3sp
Could be.
............ but considering the stuff isn't coming out, where has it gone?
It was fine before, but no now.
This is thinking that it is actually the hub that's rattling.
Busy tomorrow, but Sunday morning could see me pulling it apart.
The plastic shims I made out of a surgical cat collar (funnel) could be disintegrating or wearing away.

Good luck with the post mortem. I look forward to reading the results. I was going to take mine out for it's maiden voyage today (the hub is on my carbon fibre modified Moulton) but the steering columns/suspension tubes seem to have come loose and I could not work out a quick fix. That make three bikes out of action ATM!!!
...I may take it apart tomorrow...

Re: Noisy Sturmey Archer 3sp
Thanks!
Been doing some garden gate-building today. Bought timber, screws and gate furniture via click and collect from B&Q, and was out driving there at soon after 8am this morning.
All done and finished, and now a beer (or three) to relax. Been busy from leaving this morning - until now - just after 2pm.
Any road up, back to the question in point.
The SA will be stripped tomorrow ........... or I may go out riding. Therefore it'll have to wait until Monday ............ or later in the week, but it will definitely be stripped and checked out as soon as I can.
I will certainly report back.
