I use Vaseline on leather, as it is PH neutral and supposedly less likely to rot it.
For pumps with rubber plungers,seals or washers, I follow plumbing practice and lightly treat them with silicone grease.
I have one pump with a leather cup washer and rubber o-ring seals, and for that it's both silicone and Vaseline.

Silicone oil is ok too, but should not be allowed to migrate to any area of metal to metal contact, where it will cause galling and excessive wear.
