Bullbars.....(Show us yours?)
Re: Bullbars.....(Show us yours?)
Lots to like there colin, & always nice to see someone going beyond chequebook engineering. Particularly liking the use of housebricks as jigs for brazing
My brother also uses bullbars on his singlespeed. He somehow got his brake levers backwards on the bar ends - I'll give it a closer look next time I'm round there.

Re: Bullbars.....(Show us yours?)
Serious bit of Bodgery that Colin. Here's another idea from my trike project. Inverted drops with the hooks cut off and weinmann brake levers with the cable route reversed for that aero look. Pair of weinmann centre-pulls doubled up and bodged to work in a linear fashion ie no stirrup cable. Down tube gear levers at present.

Re: Bullbars.....(Show us yours?)
I went for the inverted drops with the ends cut off solution as I found the proper, shop bought track / tt bullhorn bars to extend too far forwards. I initially used some old no name drop bar levers, none aero as this gives two advantages: no need to redo bar tape when changing outers, plus the cables can be used to attach a route sheet to. then changed to shimano aero with the wires coming out the sides. Gear levers were not an issue as I dont have them on that bike.
The issue I do have with inverted drops is that many have too rounded a corner, meaning nothing to rest the heal of the palm on. Apart from that, I loved the set up.

Re: Bullbars.....(Show us yours?)
You missed this bit.The mountainbike bar ends aren't there for me to hold at all, they are there simply as a "guard".......i once hit a child pedestrian, and brake levers that way round are going to produce a penetrating injury; I'm not prepared to ride with them un-guarded.Mick F wrote:Colin.
What are the handlebar ends for? The black handles, I mean.
Seems that they must be difficult to hold, so they must fulfil a different function.

Re: Bullbars.....(Show us yours?)
Thanks for all the interest.
Use cross-top levers on the bullbars.......you know, that went through my head at one time, and went straight back out again! I'll have a look at a pair, thanks.
I used to run a mountain bike with flat bars and bar ends, but when I tried those same bars and controls in the last few weeks it hurt my thumbs, and i hated the position for braking.

Re: Bullbars.....(Show us yours?)
Would you believe i did exactly this years ago, even down to the reversed cable entry in the levers!.....(Stiff neck, way back then!)
Question for Si and rjb........When I'm "forcing the gear"....say a gear or two higher than really comfortable up a rising road....or any other time when I'm "working the bars" in order to squeeze a bit more power out of my old legs, I am used to pulling up and back on the hoods. (on drops)
The first bullbar set-up i tried in the last few months was exactly like both of yours, and i missed having something to pull on.....do you find this?
(My current set up I can hold the end bit of bar that kicks up and pull on that, or i can hold the flat bit and pull against the lever hood.)

Re: Bullbars.....(Show us yours?)
Hi Colin,
I am new to 3 wheels and as its a single wheel drive it doesn't lend itself to honking at the moment. When climbing even on 2 wheels I normally try to change down to a lower gear only getting out of the saddle for really steep sections. I had this set up on a fixed 2 wheel bike, but don't recall any problem with pulling on the bars when I needed to.

Re: Bullbars.....(Show us yours?)
For me, when honking, which i do a lot on that bike due to it only having the one gear, it feels exactly the same as when honking on the hoods of a normal set up, or on the bar ends of a narrow flat bar. As the bull horns slope upwards slightly at the front its easy to pull back and up. Indeed, my aim was to replicate the postiton of being on the hoods, but with superior braking.
Re: Bullbars.....(Show us yours?)
I like bullhorns on my single-speed bike(s), they provide great leverage when standing up on the pedals to get rid of that cliff by the sea
Does need a lot more fiddling though, at least for me. There is a risk of putting too much weight on the front, and with the upper body more stretched and lower, any angle of the bars or mm of stem length does make a big difference in the long term
(yes, the front bag was fairly close to the wheel!)

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best,
since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.
Thus you remember them as they actually are...

According to your post here https://forum.cyclinguk.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=113798&p=1119209#p1119209 we are the same size....I'm 5' 10", which is 178cm same as you; my inseam by the book & crotch method is 84.5cm compared to your 82.5cm.
My bike above is a 54 measured BB centre to top of seatpost; yours is at least a size bigger, and has a great deal more seatpost showing.

Old style Tiagra levers with cables coming out of the side - ideal for bullhorn bars.
