Advice needed on derailleur

Post by CJSIMPSON »

Hi All,

My son has a mountain bike and has recently broken his rear derailleur.
It is a 6 gear rear set and it is a Shimano Tourney RD-TY21

I am having difficulty locating one that looks exactly the same so am wondering if any will fit or will another (newer) model be suitable? If so could anyone recommend any? I have seen the SHimano Tourney TX35 pop up quiote a lot.

Its only a cheap bike so don't need anything fancy.

Any help would be great thanks,

TY21

TX35 should work though.

Thanks Gaz but that looks different to the one he has - I have attached a photo if you could check against that it would be great.

Thanks again

Most Shimano rear dérailleurs will match. Up to recently they all had the same cable pull so even 7,8 speed will work with your bike.
They may look different but that makes no difference to their working. The main thing to watch out for is the requirement for a "long cage" version to work with a triple chainset.

From the photo - I don't recognise the frame fitting so wondering if this is better:-

You'll never know if you don't try it.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

How about this as I can get free next day delivery and I was reading and it appears that this is the replacement for the TX35.

You have to bear in mind that the one he has is broken. Things look different when they're broken  .

It would be a fine replacement, good value with Prime too.

From the photo - I don't recognise the frame fitting so wondering if this is better:-

That fitting takes a bolt to fit the deraillier to a standard boss below the wheel dropout (slot).
On the lower priced mechs there is another option which should be avoided. It has a 'c' shaped slot that fits behind the wheel axle nut.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.
