I found the Shimano SD66es quite a bit heavier than my SPD recessed-cleat road shoes.

Also, beware the sizing. 41-42 is really a 42, 43-44 is really a 44. If your foot is the lower size of the bracket you'll float in the damned things, get rubbed by the straps and catch the sticky-out bit of the sole on odd obstructions. I take a 43 and I hated mine - sold them on almost unused.

If like me you happily wear Shimano SH-MT91 Goretex SPD cycling/hiking boots in the winter, shoe weight is not something to worry about Seriously, the only difference I'm aware of with cycling SPD shoes is the fit comfort. Can't discern my feet or legs or 'performance' over strenuous 100km rides when using lighter shoes.

The sizing does seem a bit weird - fortunately I'm smack dab in the middle between a 41 and 42, so the SD66s work for me, especially as I have wide feet and Shimano shoes (apart from the MT91 and SD66 - are personally way too narrow)

Glad I'm not alone on this subject. My pet hate and so many times I find myself unable to buy because it's sooooo drab. Not only has women's clothing colour, shape, and design often the materials used are lighter and in some cases can be cheaper. The OH worked for EWM and has really warm knitted polyester fashion tops at a fraction the price of so called specialist clothing. If they were 4" longer who knows what I'd look like

Have you considered taking a scalpel to a pair of road shoes?

I've no idea what these are like but just an example as they have various mesh sections that could be removed.

you need to go back to the 1980s when men wore colourful clothes. I remember my bright pink miami vice style jacket with fondness

Well today in Snowdonia was finally warm and sunny enough to wear the 4 year old Shimano SD66 sandals - 37 mudguardless Moulton TSR miles including a much needed stop at the barber in Porthmadog. Peculiar toetastic tan lines established in the quite strong (eventual) May sunshine.

Yes they're heavy. Yes they're not as open as the new replacement SD5/500. But they still feel and look good. The faux BLACK suede has mellowed to a rather funky world traveller look - even though I've not left Wales.

Going to wear these out before considering the newer plasticky looking grey foot bedded SD5/500 version

I'm quite happy to wear socks with my SPD sandals if the weather calls for it I think it's a pretty minor fashion faux pas compared to the garish, skin-tight lycra outfits that many cyclists are happy to wear

there are those who would say that the issue of socks or not is missing the point, once you have decided to wear sandals in the first place....

vs SD5


the cleat fixing appear to be offset from the sole centreline with the SD5 version which may be good for folk with wide feet but it may also be bad for comfort of other folk. It may also explain why some people say they can 'feel the cleat' with the SD5 model.

There have been quite a few older model Shimano SPD sandals including SD-60, SD-661 etc You may find NOS if you look around. There are also SPD sandals from Lake and Keen, amongst others. Styles (and cleat offsets) vary plenty.
