Press fit bottom brackets??? Bike choice.

Post by softlips »

I'm looking to upgrade my bike and was wondering about a Specialised Roubaix Comp or Trek Domane disc. The latter has a press fit bottom bracket. Am I wrong to be prejudiced about them?

I'm wanting something to ride plenty of miles, be fast and great at climbing. Any recommendations?

IIRC, the Specialized does use BB30 in some models, while Trek has its own "BB90" which is the same style but smaller OD/ID of bearings.
For all I've seen, none will last very long, and will last even less if the bike is not looked after. The main problem is that a larger diameter of the bearing means there's more room for moisture/dirt to leak in.
To be fair, a bearing like the BB30 is relatively easy and not expensive to obtain, and some cranks are pretty easy to remove too.

I'd say that you should try those bikes before everything else. The bottom bracket could be an issue as far maintenance, but you seem to be more interested in performance, so you are looking for CF frames with features like "suspension" systems, then your choice is narrow.
Personally, some very good wheels and tyres have never gave me the need for any suspension for road use (rule #5), so I could make my life easy with bespoke frames made out of the old, dear, metal.
It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best,
since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.
Thus you remember them as they actually are...

Do you like creaky noises ?
Do you have friends at Wheels Mfg or Praxis ?
Do you find the Loctite data sheets fascinating reading ?

If you answer yes to 2 of the above questions,
PFXXXX bottom brackets are for you.
