Bikes with mudguards rack dynamo

Post by PaulS »

Number one son is growing out of his Islabike, and ready for an adult-sized bike. Are there any suppliers offering off-the-shelf road bikes already with mudguards, rear rack & hub dynamo? Or what brand names could I use to find such a thing on ebay? Any ideas? Lots of shiny LBS options but I would have to add all these bits on. Thanks.

Decathlon's Hoprider (various models) might suit, more hybrid/city than road bike.

IIRC Genesis do such a thing. It is pricey, but it isn't bad value either, if you see what I mean, vs buying all the bits.

cheers

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't thought about Decathlon, good call. Genesis don't do them any longer. There is surprisingly little choice anywhere for what is a basic requirement in a utility bike.

In the end I bought a Ridgeback Tensor, which he is very pleased with, but even that doesn't have decent lights. There is no stand-light function front or rear! So I still have some work to do. Ho hum.

Anyway, thanks for your help.

Hi PaulS,

Glad that you found a bike in the end but unfortunately it is very hard to buy an off the shelf stock bike with all of these things included.

On my bike which I commute on everyday I have a hub dynamo, front & rear dynamo lights plus a rack and I find this the best set up for me and my commuting. I switched to the dynamo hub & lights two winters ago and I think that they're brilliant and work for me as opposed to having to constantly juggle charging lights throughout the winter. However I've had to get everything added on because my bike came with non of these things included.

I think that it's a great shame that more bikes don't come with hub dynamos & lights included because I think that they're brilliant for anyone who commutes in autumn, winter & spring. I'm not sure why they're not more prevalent and I don't know whether there just isn't the demand from customers or whether bike companies are trying to hit certain price points in order to appeal to customers and so prefer speccing bikes with other components to compete against the other companies and don't want to spend extra cash on components such as dynamo hubs and lights on a bike ready for stock sale.

I've actually only just seen your message but if I'd of seen your message before the company that springs to mind that might have offered you what you wanted for your sons bike was the German brand VSF Fahrradmanufaktur because I think that they have bikes in their line up. I'm pretty sure that there are bikes under £1,000 which would of hit your wish list of having a rack, hub dynamo plus both front & rear dynamo lights.

I'm not sure where you are in the country but I think that Chris bikes in Cambridge sell VSF bikes

Following on from Brucey's message mentioning Genesis bikes I'm not sure what there was in their 2017 range but they do include bikes with a dynamo hub in their 2018 range. Like Brucey has said they're not cheap but you are getting quite a lot of things included.

There's the drop bar version being the Genesis Tour de Fer 30

http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bikes/adventure/adventure/tour-de-fer/tour-de-fer-30

And then the flat bar version which is the Tour de Fer 20

http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bikes/adventure/adventure/tour-de-fer/tour-de-fer-20

They both come with an SP dynamo hub but they only come with a front light not a rear one.

Alternatively if it's not possible to get what you want off the shelf you could build up getting a frame (Genesis do a Tour der fer frameset http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bikes/adventure/adventure/tour-de-fer/tour-de-fer-fs ) or there would be loads of other options out there (maybe something from Spa springs to mind) and then you could add wheels that you get built up with a dynamo hub from your LBS or if you want to buy an off the shelf wheelset with dynamo hub included maybe something like this from Britich company Hunt :-

https://www.huntbikewheels.com/collections/road-disc-wheels/products/hunt-superdura-dynamo-disc-road-bike-pack-cx-wheelset-120kg-rider-weight-1939g-24deep-25wide-329-front-499-pair-pre-order-jun-wk-2

Then add the lights of your choice. However building a bike up yourself wouldn't be as wallet friendly as the Ridgeback that you've bought plus it would of involved a lot more work on your part which was exactly what you were trying to avoid. It comes back to I think the best value off the shelf option I can think of with everything included is the VSF bikes.

Anyway it sounds like your son is very pleased with his Ridgeback and so I hope that it serves him well.
