Recently watched a documentary about Hong Kong where they build high rise buildings using bamboo scaffolding tied together with plastic strips. Bamboo is supposed to be stronger than steel weight for weight, more like carbon fibre if you bond and coat it with e.g. epoxy resin.

They use bamboo for scaffolding because it is able to flex when the typhoon hits. If these used steel or aluminium they would not withstand the forces during a typhoon.

Mmm, but if you crashed one you might be suspected of being drunk in charge. My husband once made a very nice case for his flute out of some old cask staves. As soon as he started cutting and planing it there was this wonderful smell of booze, which lingered in the case for many years.
