Canti Brake Pads?

The original threaded canti's on my bike are 55mm. They need replacing. The bloke at Halfords insisted 70mm threaded V-brake pads would be fine. Another bloke in another Halfords wasn't sure. Who is right?

55mm brake pads are used on some cantis and they are really a 'road' size. You can get holders that use inserts in this size (BR-CX70 use these, BR-CX50 do not) and this gives you a wide range on inserts to choose from. Usually cantis work perfectly well with a longer 70mm brake block too, and again if you choose a holder there is a pretty good choice of inserts, which tend to be a little thinner than the 55mm ones. However the rear end of 70mm shoes may foul the forks on some framesets, and this may vary with the way the bosses are set too.

Since you have not said exactly which model of brake you have or shown what kind of fitment there is vs the forks etc it is not possible to say what will and will not work.

if the forks are ~15-20mm wider internally than the tyre, you could use 70mm long cartridge brake blocks with those brakes.

Tektro CR710 brakes are like 510 but are fitted with 55mm cartridge brake shoes like this
