Custom 9 speed 12-32 cassette?

Post by deliquium »

its OK but (if it is the standard shimano 11-32 cassette) there are ~17% gaps in there between 12-14 and 18-21 that (pretty much) persist in the final gearing. There is no gear between 52" and 61". 26-34-42 and 12-32 cassette (say) gives the same range with much smaller gaps, easier double-shifts etc

I'd love a 9 speed 12-14-16-18-20-22-24-28-32 :D

What's the best way to achieve that?

Those 17-20 and 18-21 jumps on standard cassettes make me mad :x

Currently use (very happily) custom 8 speed 13-15-17-19-21-24-28-32 cassettes on most bikes, but would like the 9 speed 12-32 on the Moulton TSR

Have you checked to see if a 22T is available in any 9 (or eight) speed cassette? I'm not saying there isn't one, just that I don't remember.

Good point - quick look at Shimano and I can't find any yet. Some Miche cassettes have them but that's not going to help.

Oh well, back to compromises and alternative solutions

You can buy Shimano compatible Miche sprockets individually.

I was going to suggest that Marchisio sprockets were one route ahead here, but it seems that they have gone bust and are no longer making them. Looks like Miche is the only game in town for odd sprockets that are not easily sourced from cassettes now.

Sadly true about Marchisio. However, a good stock of 8/9 speed parts are still in stock with Clemenzo in Berlin. I have bought from them in the past with no problems and intend to stock up with a few more after this news. http://clemenzo.com/en/marchisio/8-9-sp ... ogs-js-8-9

Or would a custom 9 speed 12-13-15-17-19-21-24-28-32

(which is my happy as Larry custom 8 speed but with the added 12 sprocket)

be just as good/nearly as good and easier?

Or does it get complicated with lockrings and those 1st and 2nd integral spacers? My brain hurts . . .

. . . as do my legs and well being, with standard cassettes and their 17-20 and 18-21 gaps in the wrong place

I'm obviously not the only one on this forum who takes issue with this plainly BAD thing?

but how much of an issue?
There are a few times when conditions are favourable enough for this to bother me but not enough to make me consider paying another £10 per cassette.

sounds OK but for 9s I think an easy route ahead is to use parts from a 13-25 cassette,

13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25

but delete the even numbered sprockets and add a 28 and a 32T giving

13-15-17-19-21-23-25-28-32

however it may get complicated because

a) the top two sprockets are often a nested pair (with a counterbore in the 12T one for part of the 11T one, for example) and/or
b) the top sprocket uses a matched lockring. If you delete the top sprocket then you may need a different lockring and/or the lockring won't bear against a serrated face. In the latter case you might want to use some threadlock on the lockring thread.

13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23T
13-14-15-17-19-21-23-26T

IIRC it is OK to use several flat 8s sprockets (with 9s spacers) within a 9s cassette.

Have you considered using BBB cassettes. You can build a 12-14-16-18-20-22-24-28-32 from a 12/13/14/15/16/18/20/22/25 and a 11/12/14/16/18/20/24/28/32. See
https://bbbcycling.com/en/bike-parts/cassettes/BCS-09S

Not the cheapest solution but at least you get your ideal cassette. There is usually a good selection available on ebay.

Thanks for that :)

Do you know if they are as easy as Shimano cassettes to modify/dismantle?

I've just had a look at a new 7 speed BBB cassette in my parts box. It is held together by 3 rivets in the usual maner. They look as though they can be filed down and knocked out without too much trouble.
