Winter Tyres for Pinnacle Cobalt 2 (2017)

Post by CityTiger »

Can anyone suggest some good winter tyres for a Pinnacle Cobalt 2: https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-co ... e-EV275616

I asked on Evans and they recommended these ones: https://www.evanscycles.com/schwalbe-ma ... e-EV150717

But, not convinced they are any better than the standard ones that came on the bike (WTB Nano Comp 700 x 40c)?

I'm also assuming the ones Evans have recommended are narrower than the ones I have on the bike at the moment? I'm wary of going narrower just because I've already come off this bike once going up a kerb at an angle and losing grip (a thicker tyre might have saved me and my ribs!).

In short, just looking for something that will give me more grip and more confidence now the weather is getting bad as my confidence is still a bit shaken from my previous fall. But, I don't know enough about tyres to know if its even worth getting new tyres or not!

Hi CityTiger,

Depending on your budget you could consider the Continental Winter Contact tyres:-

I apologise because I don't know what the difference is between the standard and premium version.

Whereabouts are you based? If you're somewhere where you have regular snow you could consider the Schwalbe studded winter tyres.

Good luck finding the right tyres for you.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have a specific budget in mind, so don't mind spending £40-£50 per tyre if needed. Even if it only stops me falling off once its worth it!

I'm in Nottingham so don't think studded tyres would be worthwhile. I use my bike for commuting so its mostly the early morning ice I need to watch out for!

The Conti Top Contact Winter II is the best available, short of studs

I've gone uphill at about 8-10% on ice using mine. I gave up on my previous Marathon Winter studded tyres because the rolling resistance was too high for full time use.

The "700x37" size is more like 32 mm, reportedly the 700x42 size is a little over 40 mm

There' also the Schwalbe Marathon GT 365, which is meant to be similar, but it's too new for meaningful feedback yet.

If there's ice about, you've got to pay attention and take reasonable care, even using studded tyres.

Thanks. The Conti Top Contact Winter II ones do look decent. Just had to find somewhere that has them in stock!

Would the 700x42 ones fit my wheel OK?
