Help with bike forks

Post by brychan »

Hi

I posted a message several days ago about fitting mudguards on a Boardman MX sport. Because there are no stave eyelets in the front forks this is causing a problem with fitting SKS bluemels.

I’ve sent away for bluemels with the intention of using p clips but this is causing a problem as there is little room at the bottom of the forks and they are 4.5 inches in diameter.

Whilst I was measuring the forks I noticed 2 identical nipples on each side and one smaller nipple. I undid the larger of the 2 nipples which has a thread in each one, these nipples are facing the back wheel does anyone know what they’re for? I have taken some photos but every time I attach them keep getting error message file too large.

thanks

They look right but do you know if they’ll fit

Thanks Mike

Odds on the bolt size of those adapters is M5, of you have any M5 bolts knocking about try them on your forks.

By the way is your bike fitted with a suspension fork? It is a bit unconventional to fit full length mudguards to a suspension fork, but it can be do-able. you would need to fasten the mudguard on the bridge of the fork lowers, as you can't attach it at the fork crown as you would with a rigid fork. what height on the lower fork legs are those threaded fittings?

From: https://www.bike-components.de/en/SKS/Federgabeladapter-fuer-RockShox-und-Suntour-p48468/

"Fork adapter for mounting mudguards on RockShox and Suntour forks from SKS. To mount the adapter, the fork must have an M5 thread take-up. In addition, only fender struts with a width of max. 4 mm to be mounted."

from the other threadhttps://forum.cyclinguk.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=119174

Brucey wrote: IIRC on current suntour forks there are mountings about 1/3rd of the way up the fork leg for mudguards. You need an angle bracket to fit them

or

At the rear some 'p' clips and a little adaptation will allow a mount onto the seat stays even if there is no bridge.

I did an image search for 'Boardman MX sport' and only a few images had any mudguards in them and they were nearly all various miserable clip-on affairs.

Boardman should feel a bit ashamed of themselves IMHO; a UK bike brand designing bikes that are so awkward to fit mudguards to, is ridiculous.

BTW I would probably buy 35mm mudguards for your bike.

cheers
