Suntour budget chainset: any good?
Suntour budget chainset: any good?
I'm looking for a budget triple chainset with a 22 inner ring (square taper). Would this be a good choice?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suntour-CHAI ... Mpd07TDAaw
It's for either a 7 speed or an 8 speed set up.
Ideally I would like Alivio but that could be double the price. Any other suggestions?

I'd go for Alivio as replaceable chainrings are available.

The Suntour XCT uses the same 104/64 bcd chainrings as the Alivio.
The Alivio, however, is HT2 or Octalink, depending on vintage, not square taper

OTOH at that price it's essentially disposable and looks like a reasonable piece of kit. On balance probably this one. So that's cleared it up between R2 an me

Does the Suntour use the same length bottom bracket as your current set up, something to check ?

From memory yes. This one needs 113 and I think mine is too.

I have used them and for the money they are fine, and as said you can replace the rings with better ones as time goes on. unless your very tall
make sure you buy the 170mm cranks, I use friction shift on the front and my BB is 124mm, if any of that helps you.

My Suntour lasted 3,000 km before it showed signs of wear.
I wish it were as easy as riding a bike
Re: Suntour budget chainset: any good?
I didn't check, and assumed S/T,so as Octo and HT2 are crap Suntour wins out

Hi,
Unless you have that crank and know for sure, I think it looks like a riveted chainwheel crank!
I have been using Suntour cranks like these (older model) and they are fine as a throw away crank, certainly its probable that they are as economical as a removable chainwheel set?
I get about 2 - 2.5K miles with heavy use all year (dryer winters maybe more) and recycled chains taken out to 1% stretch.
It all depends how heavy you are on your gear and the value you place on bling.
Shifting is very good, that model I was considering buying as a budget crank when my recycled box is empty.
If you use one chainwheel most often then you may find as I have that crank will need replacing more often, I use the middle wheel most in worst terrain so that goes first but I never use the granny, and top wheel is still serviceable, maybe half worn.
Fitted to my skip trainers so use is somewhat extreme in my hands
Others may be considerably longer, does the job well I.M.O.

It says "Chain Rings interchangable" (or even interchangeable!). The 113 BB seems to be a middling size so nothing unusual AFAICS.
So I've decided to get one and slap it on. I have two other Alivios so I'm going to inspect those and look at getting replacement chainwheels if needed (the new one isn't to replace those).
So thank you everyone, this has been really helpful and thank you andrew_s for the note about interchangeability with Alivio chain rings - this has opened up useful possibilities.
