My derailleur hanger snapped tonight the derailleur went into the wheel & the frame of the bike is damaged as you can see in picture, its only around a 3rd of the way round the hole thats broken away, can this be repaired? does it need to be repaired? Thanks

What's the bike? In theory, the bolts only hold the hanger in place while the wheel is out, because the QR will do it the rest of the time. So, it should be OK if you can find a new hanger. I think!

You might be able to use a dropout saver (a nut designed to go where the hanger used to be) and mount a replacement hanger. Otherwise, you will probably have to do a little home engineering to mount a replacement.

I wouldn't think it would too hard to bodge something.

It obviously needs to be reasonably secure, or you will go through derailleur parts and possibly wheels fairly quickly. It could also cause an accident if a derrailleur in your spokes brought you to a sudden stop at an inconvenient moment.

How bad is that damage on the seatstay ?

It doesn't look very safe . . .or, safe at all . . . . , from the photo.

I would suggest that in the damaged hole, you fit a longer csk screw with a (larger) washer on the inside face of the dropout. This will make the hanger pretty secure. However there may then not be enough clearance to allow the chain to run on the smallest sprocket. If you really can't live with this, it may be possible to fit a washer on the axle to push all the sprockets leftwards enough.

Note also that there is a machined pocket where the hanger sits. If there are burrs or other deformations in this pocket, these should be carefully dressed (i.e. filed) before a new hanger is fitted.

cheers

I thought it was mostly paint/coating that was loosened by the chain hitting it?

+2. The Fuji Transonic has a carbon fibre frame. The photo of the damage to the CF seat stay doesn't look good. Gattonero's suggestion of contacting a specialist CF repair company is probably the best approach here.
