Stupidly simple brake question!

Post by Tangled Metal »

I've got tektro v brakes on my 'bent, the rear one started rubbing badly on my wheel (26"). What's the simplest fix? Can you adjust the pads out or will adjusting the cable at the brake lever do it?

Seriously I've never used v brakes until I got the 'bent, having only ridden road bikes or hybrid with disc brakes. I've never had to adjust or even look at them before. Hence the stupidly simple comment.

the brake will have started rubbing for one of several reasons;

- wheel put back into bike off-centre
- wheel has become slightly buckled
- brake arms have gone off centre

On the latter point the brake arms usually have adjusters on them (small screws near the base of each arm) which can be used to recentre the brake if necessary. However these won't be 100% effective if either arm is starting to seize where it is meant to pivot on the boss; this part needs lube from time to time.

cheers
