Rear v brake calipers

Post by Fraz101 »

Further to my broken spoke thread I have recently replaced my rear brake inner and outer cables, noodle and blocks.

I also removed, cleaned and adjusted the v brake calipers springs as best I could.

Now I know I need to true my rear wheel (the brake is catching on wheel) however I’d like your opinion on the calipers operation. They still seem a bit slow to retract.

I also have this problem on one of them

As you can see the plastic part of the adjustment screw has broken.

Should I just buy a set of v calipers?

It's an awfully cheap solution to have the adjustment screw bearing into plastic, and you will be forever battling them. Personally I'd buy some basic Shimano or Avid ones which will last.

However, being slow to retract may simply be the cable outers being worn or gummed up.

You need to lubricate the inner wire as you thread it through the outer; anything that moves in the brake or the lever also benefits from lubrication.
It all sounds very dry in your video.
Even then, you are unlikely to get the brakes to retract evenly with one adjusting screw bust.

With a broken plastic adjustment cowl its time to replace the calipers. Before you fit the new ones its worth cleaning the frame bosses with wet and dry paper then applying a layer of grease. Also, pay close attention to the cable run. Is it too long creating unnecessary bends that increase friction.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

you can buy a set of new shimano BR-T400 for only a bit more than that. I also think there is another model which is a bit cheaper.

[edit; also in Halfords you can buy a complete set (front and rear) of basic Clark's branded V brakes for about £20. You get levers, cables, brake arms, the lot. If the other bits are not in great shape that might a good solution.]

Not rare at all. Certainly not worth it at that money!
The parallel push mechanism gets slack with age and tends to cause screeching.

Honestly the simple ones you have had recommended will do the job fine.

a Brucey top-tip; whenever you lubricate the chain, put a single drop of oil on the pivots of the V brake arms. If you don't do this eventually they seize up.
