Calipers, arms and levers: definition

Post by horizon »

There seems to be the possibility for confusion between these terms so I wondered if although technically they are interchangeable we somehow by custom reserve each word for a certain circumstance. AIUI:

Brake lever: what you move with your hand at the handlebar to actuate the brake
Brake arm: the piece of metal that fits on the pivot and holds the brake block onto the rim (v brakes and cantilever brakes).
Cantilever: the brake arm on cantilever brakes
Caliper: a set of two arms that are joined and move together to hold the brake block onto the rim

Am I right in thinking we don't use caliper in reference to V or cantilever brakes (even if only to avoid confusion)?

(I haven't done a lot of Googling on this though this seems useful:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_b ... per_brakes.)
