Wanted - Rack and Bag

Post by Mick F »

I have one of these:
https://www.altura.co.uk/products/detai ... k/?ng=1003
I have a second post clamp, but it won't work properly on Mercian because of the aero seatpin.

I also have one of these - rarely used:
https://www.ortlieb.com/en/Saddle-Bag%2 ... isibility/

........ and one of these:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/topeak-aero-wed ... addle-bag/ with two clips so I can swap it between bikes. It contains tubes, tools, and CO2 etc. Because I have the Topeak clips on both saddles, it's a faff to change the clip over from Topeak to Ortlieb with Mercian, so rarely use the Ortlieb.

My issue is, that I love the Altura Aran and it fits beautifully on Moulton. I want it to fit on Mercian, but it won't.

Two options as I see it.
One, replace the lovely Campag aero seatpin with a round one.
Two, buy a small rack that fits the brake bridge and dropouts, and bag to fit it.
I don't want the full-on pannier system, just a bag to carry sarnies and food, tools, Goretex top, lock etc
Basically, I want a bag like the Altura that fits on a rack.

Any ideas please?

There's your answer, you don't need a second option.

When I needed to pull mini-me on a tag along I swapped my own lovely Campag aero seatpin for a round one. It does the job every bit as well.

Ok.
New round seatpin.

I have been sort considering this for a while I suppose, just never actually took the step to see the various makes etc.
27.2mm with the same setback as I have now.

Which one did you buy?

I just popped into my LBS and bought whatever they had on the shelf, I expect it is some mass market brand or other but I don't recall which. It was ridiculously long and whilst I initially installed it at full length I have since cut it down.

At the time of purchase I thought I'd only have it there for a few years before restoring the Campag to pride of place. It wasn't long before I realised the aesthetics weren't improtant to me and I wouldn't be changing it back.

The Campag was sold on. Top one of these two IIRC.

On a classic bike I'd only fit a Carradice!

Otherwise, those "bikepacking" saddle bags can take lots of stuff, but suit better a "modern" bike. Can work with any shape of seatpost.

Not that I'm miserly, but I don't see that spending money on a new seatpin when I already have a bag that'll do ......... the Ortlieb.
I have to swap out the saddle clip thingies to change from one bag to another. No big issue, but it's a faff.
I do have a rear rack I could use, so that would need a new bag, and I wouldn't need a new seatpin.

Another thought that comes to mind, is that if I do get a new round seatpin and use the quick clip thingy for the Altura so I can swap from bike to bike, the clamp and unit on the rear of the new round seatpin will foul the Topeak bag.

Ho hum.

Clip the bag on the saddle. Simples

Not sure I want one of those Italian Carradice bags on my British bike. As a good friend once explained you pronounce it Carra-deech-aye.

certainly there isn't a culture of "touring" bikes in Italy, hence no manufacturers of "good ol' duck cotton" saddle bags.
Btw, is your bike made out of British components only? I bet it isn't

Of course it’s a British bike! Apart from a few things like Japanese gear train, French wheels, US tyres and saddle, German mudguards, and the frame is from Spa ...... Oh no, I think their titanium frames come Taiwan! There must be a British bit somewhere. Perhaps I should get a Carridice bag, after all Nelson can’t be that far away. :D :D.

Great big tongue in cheek here! Amazing how all those bits work together. Long live international co-operation.
