Can you help naming this part please?

Post by Grarea »

Hiya,
I have a broken bit and was going to search for one, but I am not sure what it is called.

It is from Shimano BR M454 Cantilever brakes and it is from the pinch bolt (?)
that holds the straddle (?) wire on.

What is it called please?
Thanks

http://si.shimano.com/#/en/search/Keywo ... %20BR-M454

I think that's the path to download the relevant Shimano tech doc which should tell you what they call it and their reference.

To download it as a pdf you need to tick the box at the end of the line marked EV

Since you have had a sensible reply from 3C, may I name it Trevor?

Trevor sounds much more interesting than "81N 9804"

As above, it is part of the "Wire fixing bolt unit"

Brilliant, thanks.

So, "two Trevors" it is.

in many modern browsers ( which read and display .pdf files directly, e.g. MS Edge) if you just click on the blue text it opens in another window with this URL

cheers

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might find one (or two) of aforementioned Trevors?
I have been a-searching, but have not been successful.

I guess the LBS but I am working every day at the moment.

St John Street Cycles usually have a back of providing obscure parts, but do not list these - you could try giving them a ring

They are a "vintage" item so it may not be easy to find, as brake design has changed and modern brakes do not have similar. Tracking them down through a vintage cycle specialist may be the answer

If it were me, I'd try cycle jumbles.

As above, calling a place like SJS or Spa is also good. Even if they don't have any, they may well have some suggestions about where to get them.

Failing anything else, I don't think it would be difficult to make.

You don't give your location, but many towns/cities have local charities which do up donated/abandoned bikes and sell them on. If there's one near you, it would be worth popping in with the broken part to look for a match. They are likely to have all sorts of bits and pieces salvaged from donated bikes (which are sometimes too damaged to be repairable, but may still have usable parts on them). Even if they don't have the right bit, they will have people who are used to bodging things who could likely advise you on alternatives.

These guys are local specialists - another call that might be fruitful, perhaps?

Your brakes are Exage 500Lx I think , I have a very similar looking pair of Exage BR-M350 spare the 'Trevor'

looks the same to me, though the little bolt sub assembly has a different number.

Trev's name is actually Wire Fixing Plate, item 23 here on the BR-M350 tech doc below.

http://si.shimano.com/pdfs/ev/EV-BR-M350-0854A.pdf

It looks like the same part to me 6mm dia hole, its yours if you want it, just PM me your address

or you can have the complete set of brakes FOC if you want , I got them for free anyway off another forum member and

I'll never use them, you might get some other spares off them in the future.

Oh, wow, yes please.
That sounds excellent.
That is very kind of you.

Like you say, they look the same don't they?
I measure the hole and it is a 6mm hole (Ignoring the flat sides).

I would love to take the set off you for spares, that is a great idea.
It is from a Saracen (about 1990) that my son uses and loves.
So, it could well be time for things to start breaking couldn't it?

I shall pm you, thanks again.
