Re: Odd noise from wheel - help??
Hi,
Everything has been covered above for sure.
Swarf in the rim.
Worth a try, whack the bare wheel minus the tyre onto a wooden carpeted floor and turn around as you go, might jam or drop into another space.

does it spin smoothly on the hub?
Can you put your ear close enough to hear where the sound is coming from?

Joint looks fine, and it's not something loose in the wheel as it's a resonance / vibration rather than something moving around

Hub is totally smooth
Sound is definitely coming from the rim - managed to recreate yesterday with just wheel (no tyre, tube, rim tape, QR skewer) - it's a vibration from the rim itself - like a tuning fork would sound, but lower pitch

How old is the wheel? How many miles has it travelled?chris_suffolk wrote:Brucey wrote:have you checked out Hamster's suggestion re the rim joint?

It's about a year old, about 1000 (dry) miles

that's kind of cool. So, you just need to add a little something? Tape, maybe?

I had thought the same, to add some form of vibration dampener, but what, where and how so that it doesn't spoil the look of the wheel, nor add off center weight on just one side.

That went long ago, assuming it was even ever there in the first place, which I doubt as it was a bespoke build.

Hi,
Tuning fork, sounds about right.
Resonance quite possible, if everything is tight and sound, you might have to accept the noise, I am assuming that it is not heard whilst ridden..................

Unfortunately I first noticed it when riding over some rough(ish) road (like most of the UK - lol). Thought that the valve nut was loose until I remembered I had removed it. So yes, it is present when riding, but not all the time. Odd thing is it's only just started after a year with the wheel.
Re: Odd noise from wheel - help??
i still think it's eyelet related given the 40+ PSI thing.
i'd remove tyre, tube and tape then give each exposed spoke ending/eyelet a squirt of GT85 etc and also check that each is firmly down in the rim. if the wheels hasn't been wet then it's unlikely to be a load of corrosion but i think it may be a creak there that resonates in the rim.

Will give that a try
