Viagra 4700 left lever stuck

Just got a nice new shiney bike with a Viagra group set on it. Took it out this morning, short hilly ride to a local ATM. I decided to check the gears so clicked through all the combinations with no problems. On the way I changed down on the front for a hill and back up at the top no problem. At the foot of the next hill I go to change down and the lever swings across with no resistance and no click. I then tried the up shift, a lever, the lever won't move out of the line of the lever hoods.

When I got home I checked the cable alignment, all looks fine. I released the cable and the detailed changed down to the small ring. The up shift lever still has limited movement and the down shift swinging with no clicks. I've tried pushing the cable back through the over but I'm sure the lever needs to be in a certain position for installation / removal of the cable so I think it probably in the wrong position.

Has any one had a similar problem , it appears to be quite common, and if so is there a solution short of taking it back for a replacement lever to be fitted?

I had a laguh when I saw the title. You can correct it with the edit button? Or perhpas, you'd rather leave it.

Wait a while and it'll wear off and the stiffness will subside.
Seriously if it's a new bike, I'd take it back to the shop - that's what you pay for buying new.

But from your description you have released the cable through the pinch bolt on the mech? If so the gears will be now be out of adjustment.

The probable reason the upshift lever won't move is that the internal mechanism is already as far as it will go.

The reason the downshift lever does nothing is most probably that there is a sticky pawl in the mechanism, that isn't latching with the downshift mechanism. There are many possible causes for this but a very common one is that the shifters need a squirt of fresh lube because they have dried up inside.

Anyway unless you are able to fix the problem with the shifters yourself and then readjust the cable correctly (if you have indeed moved it in the RD) a trip to the shop where you bought it is in your future.

Check the outer cable where it fits into the lever. If its a cheap alternative housing it could have delaminated and the metal strands are on their way past the end cap and heading destructively towards the shifter mechanism.

Operate the smaller lever at least 10x
Peel the rubber hood forward, there's a cover on the outside of the STI body that you can (gently) lever open with a flat-bladed screwdriver
The gear cable sits in a keyhole-shaped slot, it needs to be fully seated so that it engages with the lever. You might need to undo the cable clamp at the derailleur and fiddle about to get the cable right. Keep tension on the cable and clamp it back up (about 5Nm from memory)

Or pop it back to the shop
