Find a MTB triple chainset in SILVER, 165mm cranks
Hi, I'm struggling to find a part, I wonder if anyone can suggest a supplier?
I'm trying to lower the gearing on my better half's backcountry tourer. It's a 9 speed triple, and is currently limited by having a road (5 bolt) chainset which won't accept less than (I think) 26 teeth. I'd like to fit an MTB chainset to get it down to 24 or even 22.
But, she's very average height for a woman of our age, and has come to prefer 165mm cranks. So far, SJS at least can provide:
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/chainsets/t ... 22t-165mm/
But, this is also her pretty bling bike, and really, really, it ought to be silver. Not black.
Suggestions appreciated.
(just for completeness, the bike currently has 26-44 front, 11-34 cassette, 700x35 tyres, and uses an LX rear shifter and 105 front. The gears, with bar end shifters, work well, but a little lower would always help)

The inner ring is likely to be 74 BCD on your existing chainset. If it is it will take a 24 tooth ring. If not there's this in silver - availed with 160 to 174 cranks and goes down to 24. https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s109p28 ... cral-Rings
There's also these which go down to 24 and you could fit rings of your choice. https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s109p20 ... ing-Cranks

Spa Cycles have a Stronglight and their own brand. At least the Stronglights are currently available in 165. My wife has the Stronglight on her bike and the XD-2 on the back of the tandem. Both are good.

Big wheels good, small wheels better.
Two saddles best!

If your wife could cope with 160mm or 170mm and you want bling I'd go for Middleburn.

Ow! Thanks, Bling indeed, but what prices!
I made a mistake in my original post - the bike does indeed already have a 24T inner, not 26T. Indeed, it's fitted with the Spa chainset mentioned above. However, the concept of my question is still correct (I think) - to go lower than it is (24T on 74mm BCD), I'd need a 4 bolt chainset.
And then only go to 22T, I guess. Not sure that is worth the XTR's £350 (plus ring change), which, compared to the SJS's £120, is just to get (mostly) silver.
Any more ideas, folks?

Mountain tamer. Essentially an adapter to allow sprockets to be fitted in the inner position of a 74BCD chainset* (or in some cases as a quad). No knowlege of seller or specific item.
Further info.
*AIUI if the inner chainring has removable spacers this simply takes their place. Other chainsets require modification.

It's a lot of expense to drop just two teeth. Have you looked into fitting a larger cassette instead?

I recommend trying a 'range extender' rear cog, 40 tooth for your cassette. I've done a few of these for people, albeit on 10 speeds. There's no reason it shouldn't work with ( speed and your LX mech. It's a very neat solution, and you don't change your front set up.

Re: Find a MTB triple chainset in SILVER, 165mm cranks
Thanks latest few replies. I had thought about a bigger cassette, but for 9 speed, I'm only aware of 36T max, which I think is called Megarange and a) has an huge jump between 1st and 2nd, b) is only available in pretty low end, heavy, levels (whereas a smaller ring is lightening). Also going 34T to 36T is less benefit (2/34) than 24T to 22T (2/24). But I can certainly look again at this.
Another minor factor is that its companion bike (mine) is identical in parts at present. That's been pretty useful on expedition. But I suppose changing one crankset to 4 bolt is a worse crime in that respect, than fitting different blocks.
If only we were getting younger, not older!

12-36 cassettes are available in decent spec (Alivio) and quite cheap now.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Shimano-9-Spee ... ref=plSrch
Here is some information from Harris cyclery including steps in sprocket sizes and how to get a non Shadow mech to work with it:
THE HG400 MODEL IS REPLACING THE HG61
12 - 14 - 16 - 18 - 21 - 24 - 28 - 32 - 36 Teeth
Note: Shimano recommends that this cassette is only compatible with Shimano Shadow type rear derailleurs. We've run it successfully with a basic Deore (non-shadow design) with a longer (20mm) B-tension screw all the way in. You might have to reverse it for more adjustment.
If this cassette is being used on a 29er Mountain bike, it must be used in conjunction with the Shimano M629/M529 29er hubs.
Designed for 29ers but is also a new option for touring bikes!
No need to replace your double crankset when you have a 36t bailout gear!
This cassette will fit any Shimano 9-speed hub.

also this.

God knows what it would run like though, or the quality. Definitely need a new rear mech for this one.
