In trying to understand the cause of a very stiff operation of my front derailleur (mech = FD-M550; shifter = ST-M095) I have received 2 different recommendations on how to pass the cable through the clamp. The route I chose was to pass it in a straight vertical line after exiting from the cable guide under the BB, and inside a 'peg' cast in the clamp. However, as can be seen from the attached photo (assuming I can figure out how to attach it !) there is a groove cut into the clamping surface that is about 90 degrees to a vertical line. The other advice is to pass the cable outside the peg and then locate it in the groove.
Which is correct?
(I cannot be sure that this groove is original and not just wear in the cable clamp)
Shimano FD-M550: correct way to clamp cable?
Re: Shimano FD-M550: correct way to clamp cable?
cable goes over (i.e. to the left of) the little peg, IIRC. Force at the shifter will be slightly higher if the other route is taken, and the shift ratio will be wrong for indexed front shifting.

I already looked, and it isn't....
However there were lots of other mechs with this design, so one of those SI techdocs ought to have a diagram.
cheers

See above for Steve O'C's reply and image on my Stiff Front Changer posting.
fausto.
Not a very good link, but shows the correct cable clamp position (above the tab).

Re: Shimano FD-M550: correct way to clamp cable?
OK fellas, it's clear I did not clamp the cable in the correct way.
I'm really thankful for the quality of the advice/answers on this technical forum. It creates a lot of credibility. Thank you.
