Anyone using an 11-speed 11-42t (or similar) with a triple chainset?

RD-M8000-SGS has 47t capacity, and is rated 3x11-40t, 2x11-42, or 1x11-46.

In practice I can't see any reason at all why you couldn't run it with a triple and an 11-42t cassette.

Don't know. I've never found it. I know I'm stable at around 20 inch.

I agree with you that staying on is better but walking does give your bum a break and there is very little loss of speed.

I think I read somewhere that 17" was about the limit but I want to try 16". As I said, i'm sure others will claim lower.

I've a feeling 17 would be about it for me. I am not especially supple in the leg and find walking up a very steep hill stretches my calfs too much as my toes point upwards more than I'm comfortable with. I get my bum breaks by standing while freewheeling on long descents, or occasionally by getting out of the saddle to power over a small rise.

I use a 42-32-22 with an 12-36 cassette and a non shadow derrailleur on my tourer works out at 15.25 inches.
A little bit of adjustment on the B screw no problems, I run a shadow derraileur on a 42-33-22 with a 11-34 casseette easily. I think it would probably go to 40. With an extender it would go to 42. Just avoid extremes big-big, small small.

I have a bottom gear of 16" and I can assure everyone that it's not difficult at all in that gear. You may feel it could be difficult, but until you try it, you won't know.

My 16" comes from 18.3" rolling diameter wheel with a 28t big sprocket and a 34t inner ring combined with 1st gear of the Sturmey Archer.
Actually, it's 16.7" so not quite the "magic" 16".
I wonder if I were to fit a different cassette with a 30t big sprocket, how I would get on with a bottom gear of 15.6".

I could get an Ultegra 12-30 cassette.
I'd lose the 135" top and only have 123.7" but that's not too bad eh?
By having a 12t instead of an 11t, the smallest sprocket would last longer.

I don't like 11t sprockets anyway. They feel rough when you run them on a stand, which means that some of the energy you put into them is being wasted on poor mechanical action. Something to do with the chain having to do such a tight turn perhaps.

I have 19 inches (24/34) but I still couldn't get up to the top of Pork Hill from Tavistock with a load of luggage. I guess that 70 is just too old and I've always found hills tough! I can push the cranks round but I just get out of breath.

The fashion for 11t is driven by the fashion for smaller chainrings.

12t is better, but 13t is much better.

46/11 gives 110" top gear.
50/12 gives 110" top gear.
54/13 gives 110" top gear .................. but will last years longer.

Low enough fully loaded with a concrete block.
