Pedros Tulio: Pointless gadget or useful tool?
Pedros Tulio: Pointless gadget or useful tool?
Pedros Tulio (geddit?) is a novel scheme; it is a QR skewer that doubles as a multi-tool which you are unlikely to leave behind. The weight penalty over a conventional QR is a few tens of grammes.
They claim 4,5,6,8mm allen keys, chain tool, flat blade screwdriver, two spoke keys (3.25mm and 3,45mm), and that the skewer will replace either a 130 or 135mm OLN type one.
Once the QR is open, the QR separates into two pieces, so that the tool is separate from the skewer part.
On the plus side it isn't fantastically bulky or goppingly ugly, considering.
It is far better than nothing (which might be your other option.... ).
On the minus side
- it is expensive for what it is (but prices vary with source considerably),
- it is an external cam QR skewer (so is best suited to VDOs and rim brakes)
- the body of the tool is aluminium (I think) which probably limits the usefulness of the chain tool and the spoke keys
- there is nowhere to stash a spare chain QL (which would make the chain tool much more useful)
- there is no 2, 2.5 or 3mm allen key
- not sure what retains the 5/6mm allen key adapter and stops it from dropping out.
- the 5mm allen key is not long enough to tighten brake levers or some RDs which require a key long enough to reach into a recess
- the tool is easy to remove, which means that if someone swipes it, you get to try and ride home with half a QR or no QR at all.
So I'm not sure if this is just another daft gadget or it is something that is actually useful, even if it is only to stop you worrying about not having any tools with you.....
cheers

Just feels a bit gimmicky, and I’d have thought you could put a normal multi tool in a pocket?
Also, I’ve had issues with non-internal-cam QRs slipping.

What are VDO's?
Re: Pedros Tulio: Pointless gadget or useful tool?
I've seen multi tools designed to fit in the end of a handlebar. I think I'd prefer that, though I don't see anything wrong with the one shown in the OP.

The nearest one I’ve seen is the (?One-Up) one that goes down the steerer.

My usual is under 500, I think, including adjustable spanner and big socket to tighten cranks. Key step IMO is replacing a heavy flick knife multitool with a very light one (maybe - they have drawbacks) or something like a Topeak Super Tool, a hex or ¼" square sliding bar driver (depending if you've more Allen heads or hex heads) and relevant bits/sockets in a cloth bag or roll.

Re: Pedros Tulio: Pointless gadget or useful tool?
I'm not sure what my current multitool is because I've had it so long and rarely use it. It is a compact Topeak thing with chain tool (which I have needed on one occasion a long time ago) and is about as light as a robust(ish) multitool could ever be, so I'm happy to just keep that in a little bag with spare tubes and pump, and Quick Link. No problem to solve so I'm not looking for new solutions.

Pretty daft idea if you are going to leave your bike unattended. Increases the chance of coming back to half a bike.

The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.
Re: Pedros Tulio: Pointless gadget or useful tool?
I haven’t bothered with a multi tool for years because I found that it was easier to access some nuts/bolts with loose tools. I just carry a basic toolkit wrapped up in j-cloths. Nothing worse than thinking you have the tool for the job when the proverbial hits the fan miles from anywhere only to find you can’t get the critical tool in place.
