Replacement 42-32-20 crankset

Post by canyonornot »

Hi all,

I have a rather old Marin Point Reyes hybrid, owned since new in about 96. It’s still my only bike, for family biking and the odd 60 miler by myself.

Front chain rings were starting to slip, can’t believe how many thousands of miles they have done,,,

Had to Remove crank but the old threads were damaged by the crank removal tool. Tried a gear extractor, but that couldn’t pull it off without damage. Suffice to say I no longer have a front crankset.

Now is there anything I can replace it with. Google searches for a 42-32-20t have found nothing other than references to ‘vintage mtb....’.

Other info
    On the rear is an 8 speed cassette with Shimano Deore mech
    Front mech I think it Shimano XT
    Removed crankset was 175mm 42-32-20, CSS III Sugino, made in Japan for white industries.
    Shifters are 24 speed indexed gripshift.
    Bottom bracket is sealed with square push on for cranks if that makes sense.

So any thoughts on how easy it is going to be to find a replacement that will fit/work?

Cheers,
Brucey

I suspect what you had was a 104/64 four-bolt chainset. You can still just about buy one of these;

https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s109p2657/SPA-CYCLES-104-Touring-Triple-Chainset

but only in 170mm in the above listing.

There are more here;

including some models with square taper BB and others with different types of BB interface. Probably you will need a new BB anyway, so you could choose any, more or less.

cheers

sounds like you had a serious chemical weld going on there, most square taper chainsets will fit it. you can always move the front changer up or down a bit and change the chain.

this should fit the bill I reckon

Thanks all, a great help.

I've now doubled checked the front derailleur for what its worth its a Shimano XT FD-M770 (not original).

In response to Brucey, it was actually a 5 bolt unit. Assuming this doesn't make a lot of difference and I could put a 4 bolt one on without issues.

In response to crazydave789, it had been off a few years back, I was very surprised how tight it was. The BB was replaced about 3 years, 1000 miles back, so should actually be ok.

At 42-32-20T, the bike was pretty low geared, which was good for hiking panniers around Italy, but everyday in the Yorkshire Wolds, I would rarely drop onto the small chain ring. So I assuming there should be no issues installing say a 44-32-22T, or even slightly bigger, as long as its 9 speed, 175mm, I prepared to move the FD up the seat tube a little and I put on a longer chain?

Cheers!

If you want a 175mm RH crank arm with 94 pcd which will take the same size rings, I have a lone Shimano M563 you can have for a tenner posted.

If Hamster's offer doesn't work, then Spa Cycles list a 170mm triple for a modest sum.

I doubt 170-175 will be that noticeable. I have 170 and 175 on different touring bikes, I don't usually detect that.
