Beginner- Chain confusion

Post by Ellen »

Hello! Please help!

I've been given an old cheap bike that needs a bit of TLC. The chain was seized so I have taken it off and have been trawling the internet for a new one. It seems like it should be simple but I know nothing about bike mechanics and I'm getting very confused about what chain to get.

Please forgive ignorance of proper names for things!
The existing chain has 120 links.
The bike has 2 gear leavers, two sprockets at the front (by pedals) and five sprockets at the rear.
I measured the depth of the links at 1/8" and between the pins is 1/2".

What should I be looking for?

a chain that is described as '6/7/8s' will be the one that is closest to that originally fitted. However IIRC 120 links is not a standard length. If a 118 link chain will fit then fine, if not it will have to be a longer one. Such chains are (expensively) made for e-bikes and the like.

cheers

Does the chain really need replacing ?....Is it worn or just dry and rusty ..a soak in a bit of diesel over night and a light wire brush can work wonders ...
