Garmin if you are colour blind.....!?

Post by scarletnut »

I know this sounds daft but thinking of buying a Garmin GPS for the End to End and unsure if a red dot on green background is any good considering my colour blindness is red/green/brown!! Guy in Halfords told me he can't use them for the same reason and he was trying to sell it!
Can you change the background colour or the dot?

Which model? I've tried to change the route colour on eTrex but haven't found how to do it. Talk of a red dot on a green background makes me think that's not the model you're looking at though.

IIRC if you use navigation there is a default colour, but if you download a route and simply follow as oppose to navifgate then there are ocular options in "Settings"

It would be a bit daft if they had chosen red / green combos without any alternative, as that would make it difficult for about 10% of males. Including me.

The colour of the route line on my Edge 810 can be changed. It also highlights the route, when approaching junctions, with a white direction arrow.
You'll never know if you don't try it.

Yep.
Get the right Garmin, and the position indicator and the course to follow can be changed.

I love my Garmin Montana and the default position/direction indicator is a blue triangle and the default course is a pink line.
You can download or pick lots of position/direction indicators and there a whole list of different course line colours.
Also, you can have all sorts of different maps and scales, plus a myriad of options for data fields and sizes.

And me, it is bad enough not being able to work as a pilot
Surely this should be covered by anti-discrimination laws

BTW colour blind does not mean we see in black + white only, I love the brown and grey tones of the fields

Perhaps consider a Wahoo Element or Bolt as an alternative as the map screen is black and white.

Another Bolt vote, chevrons are easier to follow than the purple line
on my Garmin after it loses turn by turn.

Thanks for all the info. I agree, colour blindness should be considered more seriously!!
Was thinking of the Garmin 820 but the Wahoo options sound interesting - I think I'm OK with black and white..... :)

Colour blindness is an issue for other people than pilots.

I had to have good colour perception to have been in the electrical/electronic branch in the RN.

Yep - same for me as a navigator in the Merch.
