40x30x22 vs 36x22

Post by thelawnet »

I need to buy a new MTB (mostly used on-road or towpath type things), I have a couple of 40x30x22, and I have a 36x22 cargo bike I think too, but that's slightly off-topic. With 11-36t cassettes

About half my time I ride on tarmac like this (in Indonesia):

in which case 40/11 is certainly warranted over, say, 40/13.

Unfortunately they've decided to stop selling triple-equipped bikes here, and the new models have Prowheel Vortex 36x22 cranks with FD-M617-E front-derailleurs, neither of which would facilitate a conversion to triple without replacement of crank & FD.

(The other option is used, but pricing is same as new, with courier costs.)

Any suggestions?

Can the 36t chainring not be swapped out for a 40t ?

I would think the FD would struggle with 40/22.

Hmm,
Still prevaricating over this.
It's initially for my daughter but probably others will use it.
I've got a choice of four 27.5" bikes with the same geometry, the first has 3x9 M3000 with square taper bb & MT100 crank (not sure about this one?), the second 2x9 M4000 with hollowtech ii bb, the third and fourth have 'boost' hubs and a slightly better (coil) fork, XCR vs XCM. The third has 2x10 Deore M610, the fourth has 1x10 Deore M6000 (which gets you a clutch R/D), 11-42.

And the pricing £225 (14.2kg M3000 3x9/square taper/xcm fork)/£275 (13.6kg 2x9 m4000 ht2/xcm fork)/£340 (13.4kg 2x10/xcr fork)/£340 (13.2kg 1x10 xcr fork).

Oh, and while the first has the same geometry as the other three, the frame tubes are thicker or something, so it weighs 600 grams more.

I'm slightly torn - I have two 3x10 bikes so it's tempting to stick with x10. But perhaps there is not that much overlap between 1x10 and 3x10, what with different cassette & R/D.

The 1x10 seems a little simpler to use for her, as she's never used a F/D.

I do like the clutch Deore r/d over the old ones (though it's not that expensive to replace), so that's in favour of the 1x10.

And on the other hand, the cheapest bike has the advantage of being cheap and in the future I could buy some more (I'm thinking about hiring them out). I guess there is not such a big difference between 13.6kg and 14.2kg.
