I've been looking around for an 8speed hollowtech chainset, but all i can find is 10speed, will that run ok with an 8 speed chain?

When one hears the term 'Hollowtech' they think of Hollowtech Version II and where the axle is integrated with the RH crank. These are mostly only 10/11 speed and I wouldn't suggest fitting one if all your stuff is 8 speed.

If your kit is Claris then i think I am right in saying that is HT Version 1 that uses the Octalink connection: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/chainsets/1 ... set-5034t/

I have Tiagra triple Hollowtech 2 running a 7 speed freewheel Seems fine. Another running an 8 speed cassette. No problems.

mtb or road?

I didn't know there was a difference until I fitted a mtb triple to a 'road' frame and had a job with the chainline.

Sorry bigjim, the question was for the OP. I'm pretty sure Tiagra is road orientated!

Current Claris is indeed hollow tech 2 and 8 speed, so no problems using it. Any catching of the chain on the shift pins on the larger chainring when using smaller rear sprockets would presumably be less on a chainset designed specifically for use with a wider 8 speed chain.
